34 police stations, 120 police posts function from hired buildings in J&K UT: Official report

Date:

Srinagar, Dec 02 : As many as 34 police stations and 120 police posts are functioning from rented accommodations in the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir, an official report reveals.

According to the report prepared by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), out of 222 police stations in J&K, 188 function from government buildings and 34 from hired buildings.

As per the wire service— out of 288 police posts established across J&K, 168 have their own buildings and remaining 120 are functioning from rented accommodations.

The report was released by Government of India in October 2019. It is based on data available on January 1, 2018 when J&K and Ladakh Union Territories were part of Jammu and Kashmir State. On October 31, 2019, both the regions started functioning as separate territorial entities.

Post outbreak of armed conflict in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989, J&K government has spent hundreds of crores to strengthen police infrastructure.

The news agency had recently reported that J&K is spending more than five percent of its annual budget on police whose strength is more than one lakh. J&K is also getting funding from MHA for upgrading the infrastructure of the police force to improve its capabilities to meet the emerging challenges to internal security

Under “ Modernisation Grants” scheme, J&K gets funds for construction of secure and people friendly police stations, police posts and improved housing, modern weaponry, communication equipment etc.  It is worthwhile to mention here that the report titled- Data on Police Organisations- is annual feature of the Bureau of Police Research and Development which comes under administrative control of Ministry of Home Affairs.

The document is the outcome of huge collaborative exercise between Ministry of Home Affairs, heads of central armed paramilitary forces and director generals of police/ inspector generals of police of States and UTs. (KNO)
