4 years on, irrigation channel lay defunct at Pattan, farmers suffer

Pattan, July 30: An Irrigation channel is lying completely defunct at Hanjiwera Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district from the last four years causing inconvenience to the local farmers.

As per the reports, scores of farmers on Thursday staged a protest demonstration at Hanjiwera Bala Pattan against the Irrigation department.

Farmers demanded the restoration of the Irrigation scheme so that they heave a sigh of relief.

“We farmers in Hanjiwera Pattan of Baramulla district are suffering huge losses due to the shortage of water. To add to our woes is the apathy of the administration that has remained indifferent to their plight so far, as the Irrigation scheme lying defunct in the said village, said one of the farmers who was protesting.

Mohammad Sadiq a local farmer told this newspaper that they were unable to cultivate their fields because of no irrigation facility for the last four years. Moreover, nothing was done despite repeated assurances by admin.

The concerned AEE was not available for commits when Kashmir Despatch contacted.

Meanwhile, Sub District Magistrate (SDM) Pattan Syed Faheem taking with Kashmir Despatch said that he will look into the matter and also conveyed a message to the concerned mechanical department and assured that the scheme will be functional in next 20 day.
