Baramulla, Nov. 02: Ateequllah Wani, a sheep farmer from Lolipora village of Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, has emerged as an inspiration for unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir.
His success story in sheep farming showcases the transformative power of embracing alternative opportunities.
Talking to Kashmir Despatch Ateequllah, said that I was facing declining income from fruit growing, so I made the decision to venture into sheep farming.
He said I started with just 10 ewes and 1 ram and persevered through challenges, but didn’t lose hope. Today, my flock has grown to over 160 sheep, generating an annual income of more than seven lakhs.
He credits this success with the implementation of superior feeding, housing, and management practices.
He said my farm boasts three sheds, which ensure optimal conditions for my sheep.
The Pattan farmer said now my focus is on Kashmir Merino sheep, where I carefully select a balanced diet for my flock by using a variety of nutritious feed throughout the year.
Ateequllah said that the sheep farming enterprise has not only provided me with economic stability but has also become a significant source of income during Eidul Azha (where surplus sheep are sold as sacrificial animals).
My hard work really paid off, and now I supply good-quality rams to the sheep extension center and the department, where I enhance the genetic quality of my flock.
Ateequllah said that I am grateful for the support I received, and I also encourage unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir to explore the vast potential of sheep farming.
He highlights its cost-effectiveness and the opportunity it presents to alleviate unemployment issues in the region.
Ateequllah’s story serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating how challenges can be turned into success through determination and embracing alternative opportunities.
