Awantipora,Dec 14 : Police have booked seven notorious drug peddlers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act in Kulgam and Awantipora.
The detained individuals include Nisar Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Salam Mir, a resident of Mohdpora Kulgam; Manzoor Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Samad Mir, a resident of Tengbal Kulgam; and Hilal Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Rashid Mir, a resident of Bungam Okey. They have been detained under the PIT NDPS Act, 1988, following orders issued by the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, and are currently lodged in Central Jail Kot Bhalwal, Jammu.
In Awantipora, four additional drug peddlers—Aadil Ahmad Bhat, also known as Taigoo, son of Abdul Majeed Bhat, a resident of Tulbagh Pampore; Gulzar Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Hassan Dar, a resident of Panzgam Awantipora; Yawar Yousuf Sofi, son of Mohd Yousuf Sofi, a resident of Kadlabal Pampore; and Feroze Ahmad Chopan, son of Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Larow Jagir Tral—have been booked under the PIT NDPS Act. They were detained after obtaining formal orders from the competent authority and are currently lodged in District Jail Jammu and Central Jail Kot Bhalwal.
It is important to note that numerous cases have been registered against these drug peddlers, who are accused of promoting the drug trade by supplying narcotics to the youth in the Police District of Awantipora.
According to Section 3 of the PIT NDPS Act 1988, individuals engaged in illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, which pose a serious threat to health and society, can be detained for a maximum period of one year, which may be extended.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police remain committed to combating drug peddling and seek the cooperation of the public in curbing social evils, particularly drug abuse, to protect the youth from this devastating addiction.
