Saudi Arabia Makes Online Clearance Mandatory for Medicines Carried by Travellers

Date:

VINOD BHAT
NEW DELHI, Jan 2: In an important development for international travellers, particularly those flying to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi authorities have introduced a mandatory electronic clearance system for medicines carried for personal use.

The move is aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight and ensuring compliance with the Kingdom’s narcotics control and pharmaceutical laws.

According to a press release issued to Kashmir Despatch by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Friday, dated January 2, 2026, Saudi Arabia has launched an electronic service platform that requires travellers to obtain prior permission for carrying medicines while entering or exiting the country.

Indian travellers have been specifically advised to verify the permissibility of medicines they intend to carry and secure the necessary approvals well in advance of travel.

The development was formally communicated to the Narcotics Control Bureau of India by the General Directorate of Narcotics Control (GDNC), India Country Office, Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi authorities have informed that the newly introduced electronic service platform has been established to streamline the submission of applications and related documentation for clearance of medicines meant strictly for personal use.

The platform is accessible online at https://cds.sfda.gov.sa, where individuals or their authorised representatives can submit applications seeking permission to carry prescribed medicines.

The system is intended to enhance transparency and ensure that travellers are aware of Saudi Arabia’s stringent regulations governing pharmaceuticals and controlled substances.

The NCB, citing the communication from Saudi authorities, cautioned that several medicines which are legally available over the counter or by prescription in India or other countries may either be prohibited or subject to strict restrictions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Carrying such medicines without prior approval, or in quantities exceeding the prescribed limits, may invite regulatory action, including confiscation, penalties, or other legal consequences under Saudi law.

Travellers have also been advised to carefully consult the official list of restricted and prohibited medicines issued by Saudi authorities before planning their journey.

The advisory underlines that ignorance of regulations will not be accepted as a defence and that compliance with local laws is mandatory for all visitors.

As per the guidelines shared with the NCB, applications for clearance must be submitted directly by the concerned individuals or through their authorised representatives using the designated online platform.

The approval process is expected to help travellers avoid inconvenience, delays, or legal complications at ports of entry or exit.

The Narcotics Control Bureau reiterated its commitment to disseminating advisories and regulatory updates received from international counterparts in the larger interest of public awareness.

The Bureau stated that such information sharing is crucial to ensuring compliance with international narcotics control regulations and to safeguarding travellers from inadvertent violations of foreign laws.

With a significant number of Indian nationals travelling to Saudi Arabia for employment, pilgrimage, business, and tourism, the advisory assumes added importance.

Authorities have urged travellers to exercise due diligence, check medicine regulations thoroughly, and complete all required formalities before undertaking travel to the Kingdom.
