Deradicalisation Is Democracy’s Strongest Defence in Kashmir

Date:

For decades, Kashmir has borne the tragic cost of a conflict where the greatest casualties have not merely been lives lost, but futures stolen. Among the most vulnerable victims of this prolonged turmoil are sections of Kashmiri youth who, driven by anger, alienation, misinformation and despair, continue to harbour an inkling towards violence as a means to achieve what they perceive as democratic or political rights. It is precisely here that the urgent and sustained process of deradicalisation assumes critical importance—not as a coercive instrument of the State, but as a moral, social and democratic necessity.
Violence has never delivered dignity, rights or justice to Kashmiris. History stands as an irrefutable witness. Every cycle of bloodshed has only resulted in more graves, more broken homes, shattered education, economic ruin and prolonged instability. Yet, despite this painful legacy, a small but susceptible segment of youth remains vulnerable to radical narratives that glorify violence and promise false redemption through armed struggle. This vulnerability is neither accidental nor organic—it is systematically cultivated.
Pakistan’s long-standing strategy of exploiting Kashmiri discontent is well documented. Its agencies and proxy networks have consistently targeted impressionable youth, especially those facing unemployment, social marginalisation or psychological trauma due to years of conflict. Through sophisticated indoctrination, propaganda, misinformation campaigns and emotional manipulation, these young minds are conditioned to view violence as heroic and India as the eternal adversary. The aim is not the welfare of Kashmiris, but the preservation of a perpetual conflict ecosystem—where radicalised youth are prepared, preserved and deployed for future anti-India subversive activities in the Valley.
This cynical exploitation of Kashmiri youth is perhaps the most cruel dimension of cross-border interference. Pakistan offers no real roadmap for peace, education, employment or democratic empowerment. Instead, it offers guns, slogans and martyrdom—tools that ultimately destroy the very society it claims to champion. The youth are reduced to expendable assets in a geopolitical game, discarded once their utility ends.
Deradicalisation, therefore, must be seen as an act of liberation—liberation of young minds from toxic narratives, violent fantasies and external manipulation. It is about reclaiming youth for life, learning, innovation and democratic participation. Genuine deradicalisation goes far beyond policing or surveillance. It requires a multi-layered, humane and inclusive approach involving families, educators, religious scholars, civil society, mental health professionals and community leaders.
Education plays a pivotal role. Critical thinking, exposure to diverse viewpoints, and a truthful understanding of history can dismantle the myths that fuel extremism. Employment and skill development are equally crucial, as economic hopelessness often becomes fertile ground for radical recruiters. Psychological counselling and trauma healing must also be prioritised, given the deep scars left by years of violence.
Most importantly, democratic engagement must be strengthened. When youth see peaceful political participation delivering tangible outcomes—be it better governance, accountability or development—the appeal of violence diminishes. Democracy may be slow and imperfect, but it is the only sustainable path to rights and dignity. Guns silence debate; ballots empower voices.
Kashmir today stands at a critical crossroads. A new generation is emerging—one that aspires for stability, global connectivity, education and progress. Allowing even a fraction of this generation to be dragged back into the dark alleys of violence would be a collective failure. The responsibility lies not only with the State, but with society at large to ensure that young Kashmiris are protected from radical predators and external manipulators.
Deradicalisation is not about denying grievances; it is about addressing them through constitutional, peaceful and democratic means. It is about replacing rage with reason, despair with opportunity, and violence with dialogue. Above all, it is about affirming a simple truth that Pakistan’s handlers conveniently ignore: the future of Kashmir cannot be built on the graves of its youth.
A peaceful, prosperous and democratic Kashmir is the strongest rebuttal to those who thrive on instability. Investing in deradicalisation today is an investment in lasting peace tomorrow—and it is a moral imperative we cannot afford to ignore.
