The role of NGO’s, Welfare Trusts and Societies especially during the times of natural calamities has risen considerably in the modern era era. Whether it be the flood of 2014 or the current Covid-19 crisis, various relief organisations have been working tirelessly to help needy people across Jammu and Kashmir.
The voluntary work of such organisations also shifts pressure from the government that has to grapple with the limited resources available at the time of a natural disaster. These organisations at that time act as a parallel and non-formal administrations which come to the aid of the suffering people.
Many lives were saved during the flood of 2014 by these local voluntary organisations wherein they carried out multiple rescue operations. They ventured into the places where water had risen up to multiple storeys.
Such organisations have unambiguously proved their mettle in these hard times as well. Even when the family members desist from going close to their loved ones who have got infected with this virus, such associations and their volunteers are attending to their needs.
Some of the organisations have taken up the task to send cooked food to such patients who are home quarantined and have no one to prepare meals for them while others have been distributing free food-kits to the deserving and needy families irrespective of any discrimination.
Many other welfare organisations are busy in providing oxygen concentrators and arranging necessary medications for the patients in need of life saving medics.
The coordination between these Societies and Trusts with the administration has helped to improve the condition that has deteriorated since the onset of Covid pandemic and such efforts deserve immense commendation and praise.
What is required is that we give our generous support to such brave warriors and their relief organisation even while staying at home. This is our moral duty as humans and members of a civilized society.
