Fate of 52 model schools sanctioned for Srinagar undecided;Officials say focus got shifted to other things

Srinagar, Sept 13: : The much hyped initiative of the administration to establish model schools in Srinagar city has taken a back seat given the prevailing uncertainty in Kashmir.

The initiative, according to wire service—to establish around 52 model schools among the existing educational institutions in Srinagar district was taken after imitating the Delhi model of development of schools.

The district administration along with the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) had conducted a survey of schools from class first primary to 10th to identify the institutions which are eligible for being established as model schools; however the prevailing uncertainty put the initiative on back seat.

“These days the focus has shifted from establishing model schools to motivate the students to attend the institutions. There has been no class work in any government schools for over a month which has disturbed the department,” an official told. The official said the initiative to establish model schools was taken to make government schools attractive and focus was on improving learning outcomes of the students in government schools.

“The project was initiated with a multi-pronged strategy and around 52 schools were enlisted for up gradation as model schools in Srinagar. But there has been no headway in it so far,” the official said, adding that the focus was on improvising academic standards and infrastructure in Primary and Middle Schools.

The administration had decided to start 100 percent bio metric attendance and proper dress code for students and teachers for these model schools. “The staff of these selected schools was supposed to get rigorous training on child psychology with special focus in potential students,” the official told while briefing about the initiative.

The official said that not only this but other initiatives were also hit due to prevailing uncertainty in Kashmir. The Directorate had started an initiative titled – A day out with School children, which however has been stopped with given the zero attendance in schools. “The prevailing circumstances have taken a toll on the education sector. Besides academic, all the positive student oriented initiatives were hit which is disappointing,” the official said.

An official in Srinagar district administration however told that the work on establishment of model schools among the existing educational institutions of the district was not stopped. “But it is true that the focus has been shifted to other issues which have come up due to prevailing situation in Kashmir. We are hopeful that the administration will succeed in its mission and will establish 52 model schools in Srinagar district,” the official said.
