Upping the ante against motorists riding without helmets, the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO) Baramulla has initiated an enforcement drive against errant motorcyclists in the district today. During the drive 10 motorists were e-challaned and 5 motorcycles were seized for violating traffic norms. Those found riding without helmets were given showcause notices for suspension of driving licences as well. Besides, 10 maxicabs were challaned for overloading.
Assistant Regional Transport Officer, Muazzam Ali said that the drive will be intensified in the coming days.
He said that it is mandatory for a two-wheeler rider and the pillion rider to wear a helmet under section 129/177 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
The ARTO is also mulling organizing a counselling programme to explain the importance of helmets for those applying for the driving licence of two-wheelers. An undertaking on the use of helmet while driving two-wheelers would be taken from the applicants.
