Baramulla, Jun 26 : President Municipal Council Baramulla Touseef Raina on Monday was ousted after losing floor test after a no-confidence motion was moved against him.

New dates for polls will be decided by the district magistrate.

An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Raina, President MC Baramulla lost the floor test by a margin of one vote. “The councillors had moved a no-confidence motion against the incumbent president on May 25,” he said.

Following a no-confidence motion, a floor test was mandated for the incumbent president to prove his majority. But he lost the floor test today by a margin of one vote. 10 councilors voted against Raina,” the official said.

The dates about the new president will be notified later by the district magistrate.

Until then Mudasir Ahmed Tantray, vice president, shall hold the chair of President incharge, the official added.

On May 25, a majority of elected councilors of Municipal Council Baramulla submitted the no-confidence motion against Raina, saying he has ‘failed to deliver his duties and is inefficient’.

“During the last one and a half years, Raina failed to purchase a single street light. In the last 2 years around Rs 8 crores out of 10 under capex budget lapsed. Isn’t this an inefficiency? asked Omar, a councilor, questions while speaking to the media at the time of moving no-confidence.

“I thank my friends and supporters, and all the great people of our historic city, Baramulla, for your support and cooperation while I had the privilege of chairing the municipal council. I did my best despite opposition from a range of very powerful parties. I lost a floor test by one vote this morning against their combined strength. I will continue to work, pray, and hope for a better future for Baramulla,” Touseef Raina wrote on social media sites.

He, as per KNO, told the media that he served the Baramulla people for two years and did his best. “Will continue to provide a helping hand to people across Baramulla, says this is what democracy actually means. “I have learnt a lot and I’m satisfied with my 2-years work, have no guilt.”

Raina who lost the floor test had moved a petition to Jammu and Kashmir special tribunal court, Srinagar for a stay on June 6. But it was later decided to conduct a floor test where he was supposed to prove his majority—(KNO)
