Baramulla Tales: Cousin brothers cultivate home-grown lotus stems, make entire locality proud

Pattan, Nov 10 : For the first time, the cousin brothers from north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have cultivated world-famous Lotus Stem (Nadru) in the locality, which otherwise was only found in the lakes in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the news agency, cousin brothers from Markipora area of Pattan in Baramulla, identified as Jalal-Ud-Din Dar (27) and Hilal Dar (32) have made the entire locality proud after cultivating the lotus stems (Nadru) in the locality, which is approximately 35 kilometres far from the famous Wular Lake.

The duo turned their barren land into a fascinating garden, which even compel the people to visit it. While talking to KNO, the duo said they have been trying to remain relevant and continue their forefathers business to preserve the tradition and skills.

The 27-year-old Jalaludin Dar said that he completed his masters in Political Science and came up with a fish farm at his native village. “After years, the sector changed his fate as the business proved fruitful,” he said, adding that he later started to sow lotus stems in his barren land and became the 1st villager to sow lotus stems in Baramulla district.

His cousin Hilal Ahmad, a matriculation pass out could barely continue his studies after passing class 10th due to the financial crunch. Belonging to the poor family, he began to work with his father to earn the livelihood.

The duo said five years ago, they started this unit to earn livelihood. In a message, they said the youth should try to be self-reliant and youth should focus on being more innovative and subsequently try with start-ups. They also appealed to youth to stay away from drugs.

The youth of their generation, especially those living in rural areas are getting new opportunities emerging in different fields, they said, adding that the dearth of appropriate training and proper formal education in these small towns has reasonably proven to escalate the unemployment—(KNO)
