Srinagar : The general bus stand in Batmaloo in Srinagar district is littered with piles of unattended garbage these days as Municipal Committee has converted it into a makeshift yard to dump garbage cleared from nearby localities.
According to the transporters, the people residing adjacent to the bus stand and the employees of SMC dump the garbage and other waste material in it everyday.
The staff of SMC collects the garbage from various areas of the district and dump it inside the bus stand,” the transporter said, adding the employees dump the waste in the area everyday.
Heaps of garbage lying on the road continuously emanates foul smell making the pedestrian movement difficult,” the transporters adding the stinking smell also irritates the passengers coming to the bus stand.
The transporters accused the SMC Srinagar of turning blind eye towards the issue. “We apprised the officials in the SMC about the matter and sent various representations seeking removal of garbage from the bus stand, but they failed to do anything substantial in this regard,” the transporters said.
They said that with the improvement in weather condition, the garbage could become a source of disease in the area.
The transporters also complained that the bus stand has developed several potholes. “During rains, the potholes are filled with water due to which the pedestrians face immense difficulties.
They also complained about lack of lavatory facilities inside the bus stand.
Despite repeated pleas to the district administration & SMC officials have failed to mitigate our grievances.
Meanwhile officials at SMC termed it baseless allegation and assured to send a team to lift the rubbish.
Officials also said that the Municipality is not dumping any waste in the bus stand.
