Srinagar, July 08: BJP leader Shiekh Waseem Bari, his brother and father were attacked by unidentified gunmen outside their residence in Bandipora district on Wednesday.
All three were referred to a Srinagar hospital in critical condition but succumbed to their injuries on their way.
A police officer in Bandipora told Kashmir Despatch that Bari his father Bashir Ahmad and brother Umar were shot at by the suspected militants outside their residence in the Muslimabad area of Bandipora.
Pertinently, Bari’s residence is situated just opposite to the police station Bandipora.
Earlier during the day contractors association and the R&B employees had staged a sit-in protest in the premises of the office of executive engineer R&B Bandipora against an alleged incident of intimidation and thrashing of executive engineer Abdul Hameed Mir at the hands of the brother of Waseem Bari.
According to Anjum Firdous Correspondent, Kashmir Despatch from Bandipora the protesting employees and contractors were demanding registration of FIR against the deceased brother of Waseem.
The incident of alleged thrashing had taken place around 5 days ago said Kashmir Despatch Correspondent.
Ashok Kaul, BJP state general secretary (organization) talking to Kashmir Despatch condemned the incident. ”we are in a state of mourning and can’t talk about the issue in detail” Koul said.
SSP Bandipora Rahul Malik when contacted by Kashmir Despatch said police have launched a manhunt to nab the suspected militants who carried out the attack.
While talking to a local news agency GNS, Inspector general of police Kashmir Vijay Kumar has said that all the ten PSOs of deceased BJP leader have been detained for questioning about the incident.
Meanwhile, the attack has been condemned by many political parties.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted on the incident expressing regrets on what he called a murderous terror attack on the BJP functionary and their father earlier this evening. “I condemn the attack. My condolences to their families in this time of grief. Sadly the violent targeting of mainstream political workers continues unabated.”
Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari also condemned the incident terming it inhuman and very painful.
The J&K Pradesh Congress committee also condemned the BJP leader and his family describing the incident as ‘very shameful and mindless’. The party also conveyed deepest condolences to the family of deceased BJP leader.
