Srinagar Jan 06: The promise of providing reservation privilege to border residents in Jammu and Kashmir is yet to get fulfilled despite passing of six months.
According to news agency, though the central government announced special reservation privilege to border residents in Jammu and Kashmir before six months but the beneficiaries have yet to take benefit of the reservation announced for them.
Sources said that authorities took the decision in haste and didn’t took the issue of reservation seriously as despite passing of six months from the announcement, border residents are still deprived from the scheme.
Notably on June 28 last year, a bill was passed to give reservation benefits to over 3.5 lakh International Border (IB) residents living in almost 430 hamlets of the plains of Jammu province.
The bill was aimed to provide reservation in educational institutions and government jobs to the people living within 10 kilometers of the IB in the Jammu region, just like those living on the Line of Control (LoC). Earlier the move to give reservation benefits to border residents were done in 2017 but due to apathy of the then government, the bill could not get implemented on the ground.
Sources said that with the passing of the bill, border residents were hope that this action of the government will change their destiny.
Residents living near LoC as well as IB are equally affected by the firing from across the border and deserve equal treatment but residents near IB were not getting benefits such as reservation although the announcement was made before six months. (JKNS)
