Drug peddler arrested in Awantipora

AWANTIPORA, Aug 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Police in Awantipora area of South Kashmir on Thursday arrested a drug peddler in the area, a police official said.

Talking to Kashmir Despatch, he said that, “Acting on information, Police party of Police Post Reshipora headed by Incharge Police Post, Sub Inspector Muneer Ahmad under the supervision of SDPO Awantipora, Mumtaz Ali Bhatti placed a special Naka at Lidermud Crossing Awantipora and arrested one drug peddler.

The official identified the drug peddler as Athar Maqbool, son of Mohd Maqbool Ganie, a resident of Waghama area in Anantnag.

“The arrested person was travelling in a vehicle which was signaled to stop and during search 45 Kgs of contraband substances Poppy Straw was recovered from the possession of the person boarding  in the vehicle,” he said.

As per police, a vehicle (Swift Dezire) bearing registration number JK01T -2396 used in the commission of the said crime has also been seized.

Meanwhile, “a case under relevant sections of NDPS act stands registered at Police Station Awantipora.”

A police officer has said that, “Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddlers in their neighbourhood.” He further said that, “Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt strictly as per law.”

“Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” the officer added.
