Srinagar, June 16 : Former Deputy Mayor Srinagar Municipal Corporation Sheikh Imran courted controversy on Tuesday after pictures of him with supporters violating Covid-19 guidelines went viral on social media.

The photographs and videos showed Imran and his supporters gathered outside Banquet hall Srinagar where a special session was held to decide the No Confidence Motion against Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu.

Soon after coming out from the session hall, Imran along with other councilors and supporters were seen violating social distancing norms. In videos and photos, they can be clearly seen putting arms at each other’s shoulders.

Most of them had put masks on their chin but without covering their nose and mouth.

While talking to media persons, they again violated social COVID19 guidelines.

The move came under severe criticism by netizens, with social media users asking: “Will authorities book them under relevant sections of law,” a netizen Kursheed Ahmad posted on FB, as per news agency KINS.

Meanwhile, Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu lost the floor test on Tuesday after forty corporators voted against him.

The National Conference and Congress had boycotted this special session. However, four NC councilors who participated in the impeachment process of Mayor have been expelled from the party.

On June 11, this year, an independent Corporator moved the no-confidence motion against the Mayor. Accompanied by some other Corporators, he submitted the no-confidence motion to the Commissioner SMC for initiating the process.

This was the second such motion in less than six months against Junaid.

In December 2019, the no-confidence motion was moved against Mattu which was supported by BJP. However, the Mayor had successfully proved the numbers on the floor.

On 23 December 2019, former Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran was removed from the post after he lost the floor test, with majority of corporators voting against him.(KINS)
