GOC 16 Corps reviews security, troop preparedness in hinterland

Date:

Jammu, Apr 15 : Amid attempts of Pakistan to fish out the youth of Chenab valley for reviving militancy and joining ranks, General Officer Commanding (GOC) White Knight Corps (16 Corps) Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain Saturday reviewed the situation and preparedness of troops deployed in the hinterland, which consists of hilly districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban.

Officials told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the GOC White Knight Corps visited Dharmund and Sarna Military Garrisons to ascertain operational preparedness.

There have been reports that for the past couple of months, Pakistan tried to contact the youth of Chenab Valley, they said.

“There has been a spurt in cross-border phone calls with terror commanders—mostly locals who fled across the border making desperate attempts to rope in gullible youths,” an officer said.

“The calls are made to radicalise the youths to join terror ranks. We are keeping a close watch to ensure that no youth is misled by the propaganda,” he added.

Moreover, the GOC also visited the Corps Battle School in Bhalra, Bhaderwah in Doda District, where he reviewed the training activities and witnessed a mock drill of troops.

The GOC complimented the force and units for high standards of operational preparedness and ensuring incident-free hinterland.

“Army and police have launched a massive youth outreach programme in the Chenab Valley to thwart attempts by Pakistan-based militant leaders to get new recruits and revive militancy in the Jammu region,” an official said.

The officer said the outreach programme was chalked out after security agencies pointed out a new strategy by militant handlers to radicalise youths in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban, the three districts that form the Chenab valley.

“For past few months, over 80 youths were put under surveillance in these districts of which 60 were questioned and 11 booked under UAPA as part of the counter-strategy,” the officer said adding that most of the youths have relatives across the border. Over the past year, security forces have busted several modules in Jammu. Most of the arrested persons were acting at the behest of their handlers across the border—(KNO)
