From Rouf to Karakattam: CBC Showcases India’s Vibrant Traditions at IFFI 2024

PANAJI, GOA, Nov 28: The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) became a dazzling platform for India’s cultural heritage as the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) brought together over 110 talented artists from across the country. Under the aegis of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the CBC showcased a spellbinding repertoire of India’s classical and folk traditions, creating an unforgettable experience for attendees.
As part of the IFFiesta program, held on the sidelines of IFFI 2024, artists performed a wide array of regional dance forms, weaving together the rich cultural fabric of India. From Kashmir’s graceful Rouf Dance to Tamil Nadu’s vibrant Karakattam, each performance captivated audiences with its unique storytelling, artistry, and celebration of local customs.
The event, aimed at merging the worlds of cinema and culture, underscored India’s diverse artistic heritage. The CBC’s Song and Drama Division coordinated the cultural extravaganza, drawing performers from regional offices across the nation, including Guwahati, Jammu, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Pune.
A Journey Through India’s Dance Heritage
The IFFI 2024 venues transformed into vibrant cultural hubs as artists showcased a variety of classical and folk dance forms:
Assam: Performances included the energetic Sattriya, Bhortaal, Deodhani, and Bihu dances, coordinated by CBC Guwahati.
Telangana: The spirited Gussadi Dance, presented by CBC Hyderabad, celebrated tribal traditions.
Odisha: The graceful Odissi Dance, one of India’s oldest classical dance forms, was staged by CBC Bhubaneswar.
Kashmir: The CBC Jammu Region brought the soothing and elegant Rouf Dance, reflecting the valley’s serene culture.
Tamil Nadu: CBC Chennai showcased the lively Karakattam, a dance that pays homage to Tamil Nadu’s folk roots.
Kerala: The enchanting Mohiniyattam, performed by CBC Kerala, mesmerized audiences with its delicate movements.
Himachal Pradesh: CBC Himachal Pradesh featured Sirmour Nati, Dagyali, and Deep Dance, representing the Himachali highlands.
Karnataka: The Jogathi and Deepam dances by CBC Bengaluru highlighted the state’s dynamic cultural spirit.
Maharashtra: CBC Pune presented the iconic Lavni Dance alongside Mujra, celebrating Maharashtra’s artistic richness.
Rajasthan and Bihar: CBC Delhi introduced audiences to the desert-inspired Cheri and Kalbeliya dances and Bihar’s vibrant Jhijhiya.
A Fusion of Culture and Cinema
IFFI 2024 also witnessed the debut of IFFiesta, a week-long cultural and entertainment extravaganza at the picturesque Kala Academy in Panaji. The event celebrated cinema alongside a delightful blend of music, art, and food, making it an ideal meeting ground for creative minds and cultural enthusiasts.
Highlights included a Carnival Parade titled “The Journey of Indian Cinema” on November 22, which brought cinematic history alive through music and dance. Additionally, the entertainment arena surrounding the Kala Academy provided a dedicated space for youth-centric cultural events.
This cultural initiative by CBC reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting India’s diverse artistic heritage. By bringing together artists from varied linguistic and cultural backgrounds, IFFI 2024 became a beacon of unity in diversity, drawing applause from attendees and international delegates alike.
