J&K: The New Electoral Battleground for Political Parties

Date:

Just few months back the announcement made by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah for holding elections in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir broke the political inertia as many regional and national level political parties jumped in to begin their electoral preparations.

The Delimitation Commission is also left with less than a months time period to submit it final & unchallengable report that will eventually usher the election process in J&K which has remained devoid of a popular government from last six years.

But this time the elections won’t be having that same old traditional mediocrity as many new native and national political players have joined this contest. Gone are the days when JKNC used to bamboozle & humble down other smaller political parties.

The trends show that even with a pre-poll coalition among the partisans of People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, JKNC & PDP shall have to toild hard to gather votes from the people. This problem has also proliferated due to the re-drawing of the boundaries of the Assembly Constituencies across J&K.

Many other political factions had long been claiming that existing boundaries of Assembly Constituencies were flawed and irrational and were constituted in such a way that would only benefit the National Conference. However, now the tables have been turned and the pre-existing vote pockets of the native parties appear to be scattered across numerous newly drawn constituencies.

Moreover, the meteoric rise of BJP across J&K is definitely going to be decisive factor in the upcoming elections as Jammu and few parts of Kashmir appears to be dominated by it wherein Congress has been ousted in a very tactical fashion

Besides the induction of Apni Party and advent of Aam Aadmi Party in J&K’s political space has created ripples and thus marked the end of family hegemonic rule that continued to exist for decades altogether.

The new political cadres are being created on daily basis & diverse political ideologies being injected in J&K’s politics. This is creating a new precedence which is realistically democratic in nature as people now have more choices to select from.
