SRINAGAR, Nov 11: With the onset of winter in Kashmir, the residents are grappling with unpredictable electricity supply, compelling them to seek solace in the age-old tradition of kangris.

The recent snowfall in the higher reaches and the rainfall in the plains of Kashmir have triggered a  resurgence in the demand for kangris. As people brace themselves for the winter season, the traditional kangris have become increasingly sought after, leading to a substantial increase in their prices.

Sheikh Tariq, a resident of North Kashmir, expressed his concerns while taking to Kashmir Despatch about the increasing prices, but acknowledged that people are still buying them regardless. He emphasized that kangris are not only a source of relief from the cold but also serve a vital role in contrast to electronic gadgets that are rendered useless due to power outages, despite the installation of smart meters.

Abdul Satar, an elderly man in a conversation with this reporter highlighted the significance of kangris, stating that they have regained importance after losing relevance in recent years. Besides providing warmth, kangris are also considered a work of art. Satar further said that due to electricity issues during winters, electronic devices fail to fulfill their purpose, making kangris the only reliable weapon against the cold. Despite the rising prices, people are happily purchasing kangris, keeping the unpredictable electricity schedule in mind.

Kaiser Ahmed, a Kangri maker, told Kashmir Despatch that the prices for kangris vary between 200 and 1000 rupees, with the higher-quality ones typically priced around 600 rupees. He said that during the season, they are able to sell around 200,000 kangris from the village of Botengoo Sopore,  where the traditional craft is heavily relied upon by many.

While the demand for kangris had experienced a decline in previous years, there has been a notable resurgence since last year,” said Kaisar. He expressed satisfaction with the increasing sales of kangris during the season, attributing the rise in demand to the renewed interest in this traditional craft.

Kaisar said, “We also make decorative kangris, which are highly sought after as gifts, particularly during weddings. We have skillfully adapted the old traditional style to infuse a modern touch, creating special gift kangris that captivate the recipients.”

“We are hopeful for a surge in sales this year. Despite the decrease in sales, people involved in this business remain optimistic, seeing it as an opportunity to sustain this traditional craft for future generations,” said Kaisar.

The rise in prices for LPG cylinders, expensive wood, and unreliable electricity supply are believed to be the factors contributing to the resurgence of kangris in Kashmir.

Meanwhile, This resurgence has brought a renewed sense of optimism, allowing Kangri makers to sustain the art form and meet the growing demand for these unique and culturally significant items
