Bandipora, Dec 21 : The health care system in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district is in a shambles owing to lack of specialist doctors in various health care institutions in three blocks of district Bandipora including Bandipora, Gurez and Hajin blocks.

According to wire service—the worst hit block is Gurez where four posts of consultants including Gynecologist, Pediatrician, Surgeon and Physician are vacant in sub-district hospital Dawar, thereby making local residents suffer a lot, particularly during winter months. Similarly three posts of medical officers and two posts of dental surgeons are also vacant in Gurez block. Presently only one post of consultant (Anesthesia) is occupied is SDH Gurez.

Lack of specialist doctors especially Gynecologist at SDH Dawar makes local resident suffer a lot, particularly during winter as the area remains cut off for at least 5 months due to closure of Bandipora-Gurez road.

“There is dire need of Gynecologist at SDH Dawar as the area remains cut off from rest of the valley during winter months due to heavy snowfall which forces closure of Bandipora-Gurez road for about 5 months. The absence of Gynecologist and Physician at SDH affect the emergency services in the area,” Ghulam Muhammad Lone, a local resident said.

The locals told news agency that government must address this issue on priority basis to avoid any untoward incident during winter months. To mention, Bandipora-Gurez road remains closed after heavy snowfall on Razdan Pass and Gurez valley for months together, thereby making people solely dependenton SDH Dawar in terms of health care services which lacks specialist doctors. Similarly, district hospital Bandipora has also shortage of specialist doctors which include Orthopedician and ENT, making people go through a lot of inconveniences.

Local residents said that even for a minor dislocation of a bone a patient has to either visit Srinagar or Sopore hospitals for treatment as the hospital doesn’t have an Orthopedician. “Same is the case with ENT patients. Though posts of Orthopedician and ENT have been created in the hospital some time back but no doctor has been posted as yet which makes local resident suffer a lot,” they said.

The local resident appealed the higher authorities to look in to the matter and help resolve their grievances. Likewise, post of Gynecologist and medical officer under NHM are also vacant in Hajin block and the post of physician at CHC Sumbal is also vacant, thereby affecting the smooth functioning of the healthcare institution in the district. Chief Medical Officer Bandipora, Dr. Tajamul said that the matter has been conveyed to the higher authorities. (KNO)
