The daughter of Sopore and philanthropist has become the most powerful woman in the town, due to her efforts to support areas of society in desperate need of help or remodeling. The president of Municipal Council Sopore rose to the ranks of power by sticking to the roots and assisting her people in the main town Sopore of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The daughter of veteran politician from Sopore Ghulam Rasool Kar, her influence and being true to life is indisputable. Locals said that despite her ill health, Masrat Kar devoted her precious hours for the development of Sopore.
“Sopore got its first public toilet, roads are macadamised, beautification, sanitisation of the town, and even the clock tower got fixed which was otherwise a dream for the people here. What successive governments couldn’t do in decades, Masrat Kar did it within two years. Sopore witnessed a massive change on the developmental level,” said Abdul Rashid Sumji, a resident of Sopore.
During the pandemic, from distributing masks, assisting needy people of Sopore and ensuring cleanliness and sanitation of the town, Masrat and her team received applause from one and all.
“Although Sopore is lacking a proper waste management system, Sopore was never this clean. The tenure of Masrat Ji is proving beneficial for the town and I am sure that if Sopore will get a proper waste management system, it is only Kar who can do this. She is our inspiration and we have high hopes with her. The women of the town saw a massive change, else our issues were completely ignored,” said Tasleema Bano, a resident of Naseembagh, Sopore.
Masrat Rasool Kar is the first female councilor of Sopore. Recently in a cleanliness and sanitation drive, Kar and her team have been working day and night to make people aware of the hazards of polythene and proper disposal of wastage. She was seen fixing stickers on government buildings for their protection.
Sopore is witnessing a gradual change on a developmental front under her proper guidance and the support of people is gathering towards her.
“She is the daughter of Sopore. Her father was a veteran leader who always believed in the upliftment of the area. She has the same blood in her veins and with the same mindset she is picking up from where Kar sahib left. If she continues to tread the same path of development and prosperity of the town, we will always support her and this is a promise,” said Ghulam Mohammad, a trader in the town.
