Srinagar, Mar 6: Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on Thursday asserted that “nobody will be allowed to play with the sentiments of any member in the House.”-KDC reported.
The statement came after BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma objected to the use of “unparliamentary language” by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Mehraj Malik against opposition members.
During the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s address, Malik, seated behind the treasury benches, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that except for rising drug addiction, “nothing has changed in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.”
He further accused the BJP of “promoting a culture of drugs,” triggering protests from opposition members, with Sharma demanding action. However, Speaker Rather intervened, assuring that “nobody will be allowed to play with their sentiments in the House.”
Continuing his criticism, Malik claimed that the number of liquor shops, mafia activities, and corruption had surged in J&K, while major projects were handed over to outsiders, causing economic distress for locals.
The AAP MLA from Doda had also expressed displeasure over his seating position behind the opposition members, prompting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene. Omar told Malik, “You are in my heart and a younger brother,” clarifying that the seating arrangement was decided by the Speaker.
