Srinagar, Oct 28 : In a resolute address to cabinet colleagues and secretaries, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the need for integrity, transparency, and the eradication of corruption in the state’s governance.
Speaking at an official gathering on Monday, Abdullah underscored the critical importance of adhering to the corruption-free pledge taken by government officials, asserting that the administration’s word must stand for something significant in the eyes of the public.
“We have taken a pledge, and that pledge must mean something,” Abdullah remarked, stressing that accountability starts from the top.
He emphasized that the public will closely watch government conduct, especially through the lens of social media, adding that any deviation from the pledge would undermine public trust. “If we say one thing and do another, we are essentially saying our word counts for nothing,” Abdullah stated firmly.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the current operational challenges under Jammu and Kashmir’s Union Territory (UT) status, which he described as a “rather hybrid system.”
Despite these obstacles, he assured officials that high-level discussions in New Delhi had led to reassurances of forthcoming improvements in the governance model, including possible changes in the administrative structure.
However, Abdullah cautioned that some might attempt to exploit temporary loopholes within the UT framework. “If there is anybody who believes that the UT status will shield you from the consequences of practices against this pledge, please remember the shield may only last temporarily,” he warned, hinting at potential reforms and a return to full statehood in the future.
In his remarks, Abdullah highlighted the importance of leading by example, stating that accountability must start with him and extend down through every level of governance.
“If I am dishonest in my conduct, I can’t expect my cabinet ministers, or any of you, to be honest,” he said.
Abdullah called upon his colleagues to maintain zero tolerance for corruption, underscoring the need for everyone involved in governance to align their actions with their pledge. (Agencies)
