Vinod Bhat

New Delhi: Hon’ble Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw launched Qualcomm 2 nm semiconductor chip, marking a significant moment in advanced semiconductor design and India’s Key Role in Global Engineering Operations today. The minister delivered a keynote address and said – “I am very happy to see this progress. The entire world is looking at us with hope because of the huge talent we have in our country. The next level of achievement will come from India”.

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw said “We can make a big difference in the entire global community. We are a country which believes in co-creating and co-developing. The decisive leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister has given us this whole new chapter of semiconductor mission in our country”. The story started way back in 1960s when Intel’s origin, the Fairchild group wanted to set up a semiconductor unit in India. But the government of that period never really understood the importance of semiconductor chips.

Our Hon’ble Prime Minister understood the importance and started the first semiconductor machine. We took a measured program of getting first few units up and running and have at least one semiconductor fab. We started with 28 nanometre as it would cover about 75% of the needs, ranging from automotive, telecom, power management and strategic requirements.

The minister added that we have made a good progress – 10 units are under construction. 4 of them started pilot production recently. They are getting their products qualified, validated with the customers and soon we will have the first unit with commercial production.

In a short time frame from 2022 till now, we have 315 universities where all the important Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools from Synopsis, Cadence or Siemens are being used by the students to design chips. Students from remote universities and colleges are designing chips, getting them taped out, validated to actual functioning process. A huge talent pipeline is getting created that will give us significant strength and advantage that our country has been known for.

Going forward, we will be starting India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0 with a different outlook. In ISM 1.0, the focus was on getting first few semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) facilities and getting the ecosystem in place and talent pipeline started. In India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0, first focus will be design companies and startups who can design a product and take it to the market. Second focus will be on getting the entire ecosystem from equipment manufacturers, chemical and gas manufacturers, validation and testing in India. The third focus will be to deepen the talent base. With talent pipeline being wide now, our focus is to partner with universities to develop solution in different sectors.

The minister noted “As  5th Industrial Revolution unfolds, it is important that government, industry and academia join hands and create that environment where deep tech innovation comes from India. We should be able to provide much more value to the entire world. Then our strength, which has been there for so many years, will continue to remain a huge strength”.

For this, we should make sure that students and employees get the right skills that are needed for providing solutions to the world. Industry-Academia should come up with relevant course curriculum and employees should be upskilled and reskilled. This will bring new opportunities for our country.

ACB Conducts Twin Raids, Seizes Revenue and Banking Records

TAUSEEF AHMAD

SRINAGAR, Feb 7: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Srinagar, has registered a formal case against Moean Azhar Kakroo, the then Tehsildar of South Srinagar, on charges of abusing his official position by allegedly demanding and accepting illegal gratification in lieu of facilitating land restoration and demarcation.

Officials said FIR No. 03 of 2026 has been registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The case stems from a detailed verification conducted by the bureau following a complaint alleging bribery and irregularities in the process of land restoration and demarcation carried out in the year 2021.

According to the verification report, a parcel of land measuring 4 Kanals, 9 Marlas and 165 square feet—comprising Survey No. 998/54—was officially recorded in the names of multiple individuals, including the complainant. The ACB found that the accused public servant allegedly demanded illegal gratification for facilitating the restoration of 14 Marlas of this land situated at Gulbahar Colony, Hyderpora, Sector-14, Srinagar.

Officials further revealed that the illegal gratification was not limited to cash. The verification established that a second-hand Mahindra Rexton 4×4 vehicle bearing registration number MH03CP-5000 was allegedly accepted by the accused as a bribe. The payments for the vehicle were reportedly made by the complainant through banking channels, specifically via his Paytm account linked with Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Batamaloo branch.

The probe also revealed that after the land restoration process was completed, the complainant sold the restored land in January 2022 to a private buyer. The land is currently under the possession of the purchaser.

The ACB stated that the alleged demand and acceptance of illegal gratification—other than lawful remuneration—in connection with an official act clearly amounts to abuse of official position and attracts penal provisions under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Following the registration of the FIR, the bureau carried out searches at two locations after obtaining warrants from the competent court. These included the accused’s residential house at Kanil Bagh, Azad Road, Baramulla, and another residential house at Rose Avenue Colony, Gazalla Abad, HMT, Srinagar. During the searches, officials recovered and seized incriminating material, including revenue-related records, financial documents and banking papers, which are now part of the evidence in the case.

Officials also noted that the accused had been appointed on compassionate grounds during the tenure of former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed after his father—who was serving as PDP Block President—was killed by unidentified gunmen. At present, the accused is posted as Tehsildar Khansahab and is also holding additional charge of Khag in Budgam district.

Further investigation into the case is underway.

VINOD BHAT

Delhi, Feb 07:

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, today addressed the media during a press interaction on Union Budget 2026–27 in Dehradun, stating that the Budget reflects the confidence and maturity of an economy that has undergone a fundamental transformation since 2014. He said the Budget strikes a careful balance between promoting growth and maintaining fiscal discipline, underscoring India’s journey from being counted among the “fragile five” to becoming the world’s fourth-largest economy and one of the most trusted global growth stories.Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas

Describing the Budget as forward-looking and consolidation-oriented, Shri Puri said it builds on the foundations laid over the past decade while preparing India for the next phase of global leadership. India’s GDP growth for FY26 is estimated at 7.4 per cent, driven by consumption and investment, reaffirming India’s position as the fastest-growing major economy for the fourth consecutive year, even as global growth hovers around 3 per cent.

On price stability, the Minister highlighted the sharp improvement achieved since 2014, noting that India recorded the steepest reduction in headline inflation among major economies in 2025, at around 1.8 per cent. Between April and December 2025, inflation averaged about 1.7 per cent, supported by lower food prices, particularly vegetables and pulses. He pointed out that India’s inflation levels are significantly lower than those prevailing in several advanced and emerging economies.

Emphasising the decisive shift towards capital-led growth since 2014, Shri Puri said overall capital expenditure in 2026–27 stands at about ₹12.2 lakh crore, representing an increase of over 430 per cent compared to 2013–14. Allocations for national highways have risen by about 500 per cent, defence by over 210 per cent, health and family welfare by nearly 176 per cent, and education by over 110 per cent during this period. He noted that infrastructure spending has become a key growth engine, with every rupee spent on national highway development generating ₹3.2 in GDP.

Highlighting the strengthening of defence and strategic capabilities, the Minister said sustained investment since 2014 has helped reduce import dependence while accelerating indigenous defence manufacturing in line with the Aatmanirbharta vision.

Shri Puri underscored that human capital development has been central to India’s growth trajectory over the past decade. Since 2014, the number of IITs has increased from 16 to 23, IIMs from 13 to 21, AIIMS from 7 to 23, and medical colleges from 387 to 819. He added that India now has international IIT campuses in Zanzibar and Abu Dhabi, reflecting the global recognition of India’s education ecosystem.

The Minister said infrastructure expansion since 2014 has transformed connectivity and everyday life across the country. The length of national highways has expanded from about 91,000 km in 2014 to nearly 1.46 lakh km in 2026, while the metro network has grown from 248 km to over 1,000 km. The number of airports has more than doubled from 70 to around 160. Over the last five years alone, more than 57,000 km of national highways have been constructed, generating around 33 crore person-days of employment annually. He also highlighted that over 164 Vande Bharat Express trains are operational today, with 260 sleeper trainsets planned, and that indigenous technologies will power seven newly announced high-speed rail corridors.

Shri Puri further noted that India has invested over ₹2.5 lakh crore since 2014 in domestically building more than 2,000 metro coaches. Under the UDAN scheme, 1.5 crore passengers have flown on routes that did not exist earlier, making India the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market.

On MSMEs and clean growth, the Minister said the Budget builds on the progress made since 2014 by aligning competitiveness with sustainability. Initiatives such as Bio-Pharma SHAKTI with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore, a ₹10,000 crore MSME Growth Fund, and a ₹2,000 crore top-up to the Self-Reliant India Fund will further strengthen innovation and enterprise. Clean growth has been embedded into the economic strategy through a ₹20,000 crore CCUS Mission and duty exemptions for lithium-ion battery equipment, critical minerals and nuclear power projects till 2035.

Summing up, Shri Puri said Union Budget 2026–27 recognises India’s decade-long transformation since 2014 into a major global economy and focuses on strengthening the foundations for sustained, inclusive and innovation-driven growth. He described it as a nation-building Budget that advances India steadily towards a truly Aatmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat.
