LG Orders Major Wage Rationalisation Reform For Daily Wagers, Part-Time, Seasonal Workers

0

Under the new wage rationalisation framework, these workers will be categorised into “unskilled” and “skilled” workers. As per the new wage matrix, the skilled workers will be paid wages at the rate of Rs 575 per day, while unskilled workers will be paid at the rate of Rs 450 per day. The revised wages will be determined on a pro-rata basis, depending on their duty hours and the nature of work.

This will result in a manifold increase in the wages of these workers and thus bring a major relief for such wage earners, who have been working as sweepers, gardeners, cleaners, etc., in the Union Territory of Ladakh. These workers include a large number of migrant workers as well as locals, who were forced to work for such abysmally low wages due to the long-prevailing wage anomaly.

The decision follows a number of representations to the Lieutenant Governor from daily wagers engaged across different departments of the Administration, requesting the implementation of minimum wages for workers. Taking prompt cognisance of the issue, the Lieutenant Governor directed the concerned departments to undertake comprehensive verification of workers engaged after 17 March 2015, and ensure rationalisation of wages in a fair, transparent and uniform manner.

Lieutenant Governor Saxena observed that different departments in the UT Administration had engaged part-time, seasonal and daily-rated workers over the years at varying remuneration levels, resulting in major disparities in wages.

“UT Administration is fully committed to ensuring fair and dignified wages for all workers. Daily wagers, seasonal and part-time workers play a crucial role in strengthening public services and developmental activities across Ladakh, particularly in remote and challenging regions. Every worker deserves fair compensation for their labour and the Administration would do everything required for their welfare in a transparent and accountable manner,” Saxena said.

Lieutenant Governor Saxena has directed departments to verify the engagement details, nature of work, working hours and Aadhaar-linked bank details of all workers and submit verified data, within twenty days. The new wages will be paid to these workers strictly through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), into their bank accounts in a fair and transparent manner.

The Administration has clarified that the exercise is strictly a wage rationalisation measure and shall not be construed as a commitment to regularise services.

Srinagar, May 16: Director SKIMS/EOSG Prof. (Dr.) M. Ashraf Ganie congratulated the Department of Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences for successfully performing the first infant Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (Bone Marrow Transplant) in an eight-month-old child diagnosed with

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening immune disorder.
He described the achievement as a major milestone in advanced cellular therapy and bone marrow transplantation services in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and appreciated the dedicated efforts of the transplant team and reiterated the institute’s commitment towards strengthening and expanding world-class hematology and transplant care facilities within the region.

The infant had been suffering from severe manifestations of HLH, a condition characterized by uncontrolled immune system activation leading to persistent fever, multiorgan involvement, and potentially fatal complications. For children affected with this disorder, Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation remains the only curative treatment option. Without timely transplant intervention, survival in such infants remains extremely poor.
Following extensive evaluation and meticulous multidisciplinary planning, the child successfully underwent the stem cell transplant and is being discharged today in a stable condition.

Dr. Sajad Ahmad Geelani, Professor & Head, Department of Clinical Hematology and BMT, stated that this landmark achievement marks a major milestone for the transplant programme at SKIMS and reflects the institution’s growing expertise in managing highly complex disorders requiring advanced cellular therapies.

Dr. Reashma Roshan, Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Hematology and BMT, stated that performing a transplant in such a young infant requires exceptional clinical precision, highly specialized infrastructure, and comprehensive supportive care throughout the transplant journey. She added that the successful outcome reflects the dedicated efforts of hematology and bone marrow transplant specialists, pediatric intensive care experts, nursing staff, transfusion medicine services, laboratory teams, and allied healthcare professionals.

Dr. Afaq Ahmad Khan, Assistant Professor, Department of Clinical Hematology and BMT, stated that this accomplishment represents new hope for children suffering from rare immunological and hematological disorders and reinforces the institution’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art transplant services within the region.

At the time of discharge, Director SKIMS Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie personally interacted with the child’s family and expressed satisfaction and happiness over the successful outcome. He congratulated the entire transplant team for achieving this important milestone in cellular therapy at the institute.

227.7 kg Captagon Tablets/Powder worth ₹182 crore seized; Syrian national linked to syndicate arrested

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough against transnational synthetic drug trafficking networks, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), under Operation RAGEPILL, has successfully unearthed an international drug syndicate involved in the trafficking of Captagon, leading to the seizure of approximately 227.7 Kgs. of Captagon Tablets/Powder and the arrest of one overstaying Syrian national, who is a member of the syndicate.  The Captagon mainly contains Fenetylline and Amphetamine which are Psychotropic Substances under the NDPS Act.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, congratulated the brave and vigilant warriors of NCB for successfully carrying out the ‘Operation RAGEPILL’. Shri Shah said that through ‘Operation RAGEPILL’, our agencies have achieved the first-ever seizure of Captagon, the so-called Jihadi Drug.

Shri Amit Shah posted on X, “Modi govt is resolved for a ‘Drug-Free India’. Glad to share that through ‘Operation RAGEPILL’, our agencies have achieved the first-ever seizure of Captagon, the so-called “Jihadi Drug”, worth ₹182 crore. The busting of the drug consignment destined for the Middle East and the arrest of a foreign national stand out as shining examples of our commitment to zero tolerance against drugs. I repeat we will clamp down on every gram of drugs entering India or leaving the country using our territory as the transit route. Kudos to the brave and vigilant warriors of the NCB.”

Developing information received from a Foreign Drug Law Enforcement Agency that India is being used as transit for trafficking of Captagon, a house was identified in Neb Sarai, New Delhi and search of the house on May 11, 2026 led to recovery of about 31.5 Kg Captagon Tablets, carefully concealed in a commercial chapati cutting machine which preliminary investigation suggests was intended for export to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.  Preliminary investigation revealed that the Syrian national had entered India on a tourist visa on 15.11.2024, but his visa expired on 12.01.2025 and he was illegally overstaying in India and had taken the said house in Neb Sarai on rent.

Questioning of the accused further led to recovery of about 196.2 Kgs. of Captagon Powder from a container in Container Facilitation Station (CFS) at Mundra, Gujarat on May 14, 2026.  The container was imported from Syria, with sheep wool as a declared consignment.  Thorough search of the container led to recovery of 3 bags containing 196.2 Kgs. of Captagon Powder. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the seized consignment was intended for transshipment to the Gulf region, particularly Saudi Arabia and neighbouring Middle Eastern countries, where Captagon abuse has emerged as a serious law enforcement and public health concern.

The total seizure effected during Operation RAGEPILL amounts to approximately 227.7 Kgs. of Captagon Tablets/Powder, with an estimated illicit international market value of approximately ₹182 crore in destination markets across the Gulf and Middle East.

This operation marks India’s first-ever seizure of Captagon in India and exposes attempts by international syndicates to use India as a transit hub. It also exemplifies how international intelligence sharing and law enforcement cooperation can play a critical role in identifying, intercepting, and dismantling transnational narcotics trafficking networks operating across multiple jurisdictions, and how the drug enforcement agencies across the world can come together to dismantle the trans-national drug syndicates.

The seizure also assumes significance in light of another recent major NCB interdiction in Mumbai involving 349 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a container originating from Ecuador, indicating an increasing trend of transnational drug syndicates misusing commercial cargo and containerized trade routes for trafficking narcotic substances across regions.

The NCB has initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify the source of procurement, financial and hawala linkages, logistics facilitators, international receivers, and the wider transnational network associated with the syndicate. India is committed to strengthening international cooperation through intelligence sharing, extradition of drug kingpins, and coordinated action against narco-terrorism and drug cartels to ensure collective response to the global issue of drug trafficking and drug abuse.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and guidance of Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah, NCB reiterates its unwavering commitment towards the policy of zero tolerance against drug abuse and continues to work in close coordination with national and international agencies to dismantle transnational narcotics syndicates operating across borders. The NCB also urges citizens to report narcotics-related information through the MANAS Helpline (Toll-Free: 1933). The identity of informers is kept strictly confidential.

KD NEWS SERVICE
SRINAGAR, May 17: In a major push to strengthen public health safeguards and ensure the availability of safe food for consumers, the Food Safety Department has intensified its inspection drive across Srinagar city, conducting surprise checks at various food establishments to enforce hygiene and safety regulations.

As part of the ongoing campaign, the Food Safety Officer (FSO) for Zone 1 carried out extensive inspections of several bakery shops situated along the busy Residency Road area of Srinagar. The inspections formed part of a wider initiative aimed at improving food handling practices and ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Bakery staff were advised to ensure proper waste disposal systems and maintain pest-free environments to uphold public health standards.
Officials warned that strict legal action would be initiated against food business operators found violating food safety regulations. The department reiterated that non-compliance with prescribed norms under the Food Safety and Standards Act would invite penalties and other legal consequences.
The Food Safety Department further stated that such surprise inspections will continue across Srinagar in the coming weeks as part of its sustained effort to protect consumer health and ensure that citizens receive safe, hygienic, and wholesome food products.
Authorities urged food business operators to cooperate with inspection teams and proactively adopt best hygiene practices, emphasizing that food safety is a shared responsibility crucial for safeguarding public well-being.
