‘For now, it’s over’: Rizwan concedes Pakistan’s Champions Trophy fate

0

Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has conceded that his team’s campaign in the Champions Trophy has ended with Sunday’s six-wicket defeat against India. “For now, we can say that it’s over. This is the truth,” the Pakistan captain said.

Pakistan, having lost their first two league games, are not exactly out of the tournament yet. They need a couple of favourable results from two other games before the last league fixture against Bangladesh on February 27. An immediate requirement for them is an unlikely Bangladesh win over New Zealand on Monday.

Rizwan said he does not like progressing through the back door. “As a captain, I honestly don’t like this. If you can win, then do it. If you can’t, then don’t worry about it. I don’t care if you are sitting in someone else’s shadow.

“I don’t care if you are outside the tournament or in it. Yes, New Zealand has defeated us; India has defeated us. We accept it. We can play well; we can play badly. We can’t say that we should stay on someone else’s side. Allah has made this a chance, we can’t say anything about it.”

He continued on the topic. “In the next match, we’ll see what Bangladesh does with New Zealand, what New Zealand does with India, and what we do. It’s a long journey. Yes, we have hope and belief in Allah. Our dependence on the Champions Trophy has now come on other teams.” Pakistan are the defending champions.

Rizwan stood by Pakistan’s decision to field just one specialist spinner, Abrar Ahmed, dismissing any doubts. India, on the other hand, came into the tournament with four spinners and three of them were in the XI on Sunday.

“You can’t say that we made a mistake by picking just one spinner. If you look at that Indian team also they have Kuldeep (Yadav) as the front-line spinner. (Ravindra) Jadeja and Axar Patel are all-rounders. We also have Salman Ali Agha and Khushdil Shah. They bowled very well in the past.”

The Pakistan skipper also agreed that their middle-order did not fire. “The middle order was not good enough. Yesterday in our meeting we had discussed that on this pitch 270-280 runs would be enough. Because the outfield was slow and the pitch was slow. If we had scored 280, maybe the results would be different.

“Me (46) and Saud Shakeel (62) tried to build a partnership and took a lot of time. But after that the shot selection was poor and that’s where they got a chance to take our wickets. After that our middle order couldn’t take the pressure and we couldn’t manage.”

Pakistan were 151 for two at one stage, thanks to a 104-run third-wicket partnership between Rizwan and Saud. However, once they were separated, the team lost momentum and were eventually bowled out for 241.

Urges Students to Prioritize Studies Over Social Media Reactions—Don’t Let Cricket Derail Your Future

Ahead of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash in the ICC Champions Trophy on February 23rd (today), the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has issued an advisory urging Kashmiri students across the country to take the game in its right spirit and refrain from making social media posts that could land them in trouble.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association National Convenor Nasir Khuehami emphasized that students should treat the match as just another sporting event and avoid any actions that might lead to unnecessary complications. “We have urged Kashmiri students studying across the country to stay focused on their education and career, which is the primary reason they have traveled far from their home state of Jammu and Kashmir,” he stated. The association also reminded students of the immense sacrifices their families have made—fathers who have worked tirelessly, brothers who have taken loans, sisters who have sold jewelry, and mothers who pray relentlessly for their well-being.

He asserted that, Due to past India-Pakistan cricket matches, dozens of students have been detained, arrested, summoned, or booked for their social media activity or involvement in heated debates. Such incidents have led to serious academic and legal consequences, impacting their education and future prospects.

Khuehami further stressed that students must see sports as a game and not let emotions dictate their actions. “We strongly advise students to stay away from social media discussions, debates, or any form of online engagement that could escalate into controversy or indiscipline at their institutions. They should enjoy the game with a true sportsman spirit and avoid engaging in unnecessary conflicts,” Association urged.

He also highlighted the political connotations and deep emotions attached to an India-Pakistan match, cautioning students to remain vigilant. “Students must understand that by openly cheering for any particular team, they may find themselves in a vulnerable position. It is crucial for them to exercise caution and prioritize their safety on campuses and in their accommodations, keeping in mind the well-being of their families back home,” he advised.

Khuehami reiterated that sports should promote unity, peace, and camaraderie rather than division and hostility. “Games and sports extend beyond mere entertainment; they teach us about brotherhood, discipline, and harmony. Let this match be a celebration of sportsmanship, not a cause for discord,” he added.

GAASH Academy Students Shine in JKBOSE Results 2025

Baramulla, Feb 22 : Old Town Baramulla is now experiencing a positive transformation, thanks to initiatives like GAASH Academy, which represents a significant change from its past reputation for agitations and limited educational opportunities.

Run by philanthropist  Sheikh Mudasir, GAASH Academy provides free educational assistance to around 80 underprivileged children and orphans from kindergarten to Class X. The academy is committed to channeling the energies of these children towards positivity and modern education.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Dagger Division, along with the Baramulla Brigade Commander, visited GAASH Academy on 22 Feb 2025, to felicitate the achievers and encourage this noble endeavor.

Mr. Minga Sherpa, DC Baramulla, also acknowledged the young students and praised the efforts of GAASH Academy and the District Administration in educating the aspirational children of Old Town, Baramulla. Ms. Nilofar, Sr. Advocate, and Mr. Altaf, ASP, Baramulla, along with other dignitaries, including Mohalla Presidents and Maulwis, were present.

During the visit, the GOC interacted with the proud parents, who expressed their gratitude towards Mr. Mudasir for his contributions to their children’s education and also thanked the Army for their continued encouragement and support.

To further support these efforts, sports kits and stationery were presented to the academy, along with financial aid of Rs. 4 lakhs. The Army had previously sponsored a computer system, generator, furniture, blankets, and other amenities to sustain the initiative.

The principals and teachers from various schools in Baramulla emphasized the crucial role of education in fostering the holistic development of children to the parents, particularly in light of their commendable performance in recent exams. They underscored its significance in shaping a prosperous future for Kashmir. Ms. Sonabar Wani, one of the teachers present, was overwhelmed and said, “All thanks to the Indian Army, today our children have this platform, wherein I am witnessing my student improving from 38% to 83% in this year’s exams.”

Mr. Mudasir expressed his gratitude for the visit and the support, stating, “I am deeply thankful to the Indian Army and the District Administration for their unwavering support and encouragement. I urge all parents to encourage their children to pursue education diligently, as it is the key to a brighter and more prosperous future.” Sheikh Mudasir, who was a schoolboy in early 2000s Kashmir, was misled into separatist ideology, leading him to drop out and join protests as a stone thrower and eventually align with Hizbul Mujahideen. Now, at 36 and battling a brain tumor, he counsels youth in Old Town to pursue education and join the mainstream, despite threats. “Don’t ruin your lives,” he warns, reflecting on his past.

GAASH Academy’s impact is evident in the recent JKBOSE exams, where all the students from the academy passed with flying colors. The top scorers include:

1. Mohd Riyaan: 98%

2. Zainab: 98%

3. Haider: 96%

6. Mohd Ayaan: 96%

15. Tahoora: 91.5%

16. Ajmal Salaam Lone: 91.5%

17. Umaima Tariq: 91%

The success of these students showcases the positive impact of the GAASH Academy initiative in channeling the energies of the children towards academic excellence and personal development.

The Dagger Division has been focusing on women empowerment and youth engagement initiatives in Baramulla. Their notable efforts include the Chinar YUVA Centre, a skill development hub for underprivileged youth, and the Dagger Parivaar School, the only educational and care facility for specially-abled children in the district. Parents in Old Town are particularly thankful to the Army for providing encouragement and opportunities to their children in Baramulla.
