Youth drowns after boat capsizes in river Jehlum of north Kashmir

Srinagar, June 23 : A 21-year-old youth drowned after a boat capsized in river Jehlum near Hajin area of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Sunday.

Reports reaching GNS said that the youth namely Lateef Ahmad Dar (21) son of Reyaz Ahmad Dar of Banyari Hajin also boarded his bike in the boat which capsized in the middle of the river leading to his death due to drowning.

The incident occurred when the youth was trying to cross the river, they said.

A police officer also confirmed the incident and said that a search operation was launched immediately by police and local volunteers.

The officer said that the search team later retrieved the body and taken him to nearby hospital for medico legal formalities. (GNS)

No locus standi for foreign entity’: India rejects US report on religious freedom

Srinagar: Responding to the report by the United States on international religious freedom in which they have pointed out incidents of religious tension in India, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) straight-away rejected the report on Sunday saying, “We are proud of our secular credentials and are committed to tolerance and inclusion,” news agency PTI reported.

Following the queries on the report, MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, “India is proud of its secular credentials, its status as the largest democracy and pluralistic society with a longstanding commitment to tolerance and inclusion.”

He further said that the Indian Constitution guarantees fundamental rights to all its citizens, including its minority communities.

Questioning the locus standi of a foreign agency to comment on Indian citizens’ rights, it said, “We see no locus standi for a foreign entity to pronounce on the state of our citizens’ constitutionally protected rights.”

Earlier, the US State Department, in its annual 2018 International Religious Freedom Report released on Friday, said mob attacks by violent extremist Hindu groups against the minority communities, particularly Muslims, continued in India in 2018.

The report pointed out that though India’s Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, “this history of religious freedom has come under attack in recent years with the growth of exclusionary extremist narratives.”

Seven persons injured in Sonmarg road accident

Srinagar, Jun 23 : At least seven persons were injured in a road accident at Nilgrar in Sonamarg area on Srinagar-Leh highway on Sunday.

Reports said that a truck travelling from Kargil to Sonamarg collided with a passenger cab near Nilgrar, resulting in injuries to seven passengers travelling in the cab.

The injured were rushed to primary health centre Sonamarg, where from they were referred to sub district hospital Kangan for treatment. KNS

30-year-old teacher found hanging from tree in Mahore

Reasi, June 23 : A government school teacher was found hanging from a tree in Hariwalla area of Mahore in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Farooq Ahmad Dar (30) son of Abdul Gani Dar of Hariwalla, Mahore.

Official sources told that some people spotted the man hanging from a tree in a forest area of Hariwalla today morning and accordingly informed police about it.

A police party from Police Station Mahore rushed to the spot and took the body in their possession for medico-legal formalities, they said.

Farooq, who was a teacher at Government Primary School Dogian had not returned home yesterday and his body was recovered under mysterious conditions today, they said.

Station House Officer (SHO) Mahore Mohd Anzar Mir also confirmed the incident.

He said that a case under 174 CrPc has been initiated and further investigations taken up. (GNS)

Shopian Encounter: Police Version

Police in a statement today said that on a credible input a cordon and search operation was launched at Panzar area in District Shopian, by Police and security forces.

During searches, militants fired upon the search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.

In the ensuing encounter, 04 militants were killed and the bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. The identities and affiliations of the killed militants is being ascertained.

Incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter. Police has registered a case.

Citizens are requested not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any.“

Srinagar, June 23:Two more militant bodies have been recovered from encounter site taking toll to four after a gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Daramdora area of Keegam in South Kashmir’s Shopian District on Sunday morning.

A senior Police officer told that two more militant bodies have been recovered from the encounter site taking death toll to four.

The officer further said that the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained.

Earlier gunfight broke out in orchards of Daramdora area of Shopian and initially two militant bodies were recovered from the encounter site.(GNS)

Srinagar, June 23:Two militants have been killed in ongoing operation after a gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Daramdora area of Keegam in South Kashmir’s Shopian District on Sunday morning.

A senior Police officer told that two militants have been killed and their bodies have been also recovered along with as many rifles.

The officer further said that the identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained as searches are still going on in the area, the officer said.(GNS)

Srinagar, June 23:A gunfight broke out between militants and government forces in Daramdora area of Keegam in South Kashmir’s Shopian District on Sunday morning.

Reports reaching GNS said that a team of Army’s 44RR, SOG Shopian and CRPF laid siege around Daramdora area on Sunday morning.

A senior police officer told GNS that as the joint team of forces encircled the suspected orchard the hiding militants inside orchard started firing triggering an fierce gunfight.

As per the sources two to three militants are believed to present inside the orchards.

Information, entertainment basic requirement in day to day life: Union Information Minister

Srinagar, June 22 :  Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar Saturday said that the information and entertainment have become basic requirements in day to day life.

Speaking at a function organized by Doordarshan at SKICC Srinagar, Prakash Javadekar said that the Doordarshan is a credible source of information besides being the biggest Direct to Home (DTH) Operator that connects millions of people across the country. 

Javadekar who was present as Guest of Honour, launched the Signature tune of DD Kashir composed by Rahul Sharma which resonates with the cultural ethos of the State.

According to GNS, Javadekar informed that from today DTH set-top boxes shall be distributed free under a scheme across the country.

The Union Minister said that Information and Entertainment have become the basic requirement in day to day life and free DTH set top boxes will prove to be vital in meeting the aspirations of the people especially those living in border areas.

There are 25 crore households in the country with 18 crore TV sets and this initiative will also help in bridging the gap, he maintained. He also congratulated the entire DD Kashir team for gaining popularity in the State.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, while speaking on the occasion, stressed on developing and promoting regional languages. He stressed that in order to develop any language, two things are important – the pride felt in speaking that language and the literature of that language.

Dr. Singh said that with the launch of Dogri News Bulletin on satellite medium, Dogri language will reach people across the world. He said that the composite culture and literature of J&K will also get a boost as Kashmiri, Dogri and Ladakhi languages will be available on the same channel. 

K Vijay Kumar and K Skandan, Advisors to Governor,  Amit Khare, Secretary, Information and Broadcasting, Sh. B V R Subrahmanyam, Chief Secretary, GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen KJS Dhillon, Dr. A. Surya Prakash, Chairman Prasar Bharati were present among other dignitaries on the occasion.

Ms. Supriya Sahu, Director General Doordarshan delivered the welcome address. The event commenced with the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.

A cultural dance performance along with a live Muppet show featuring popular characters from a children show Galli Galli Sim Sim telecast on DD Kashir were presented on the occasion.

A Short film comprising of clips from archives showcasing the journey of DD Kashir and a video clip on Dogri New Bulletin were also screened for the audience. The event also witnessed the presence of large number of school students.
