‘Game Over’ review: A masterful thriller that is both fun and torturous

0

Game Over’s intensely suspenseful opening scene sets the tone for its proceedings. It begins like your typical home invasion thriller, with a masked perpetrator standing outside a teenager’s house, intently monitoring her movements. He breaks into the house to find her taking a shower – Hitchcock’s Psycho comes to mind. Ashwin quickly cuts the scene to show the woman’s suffering; her face covered with a plastic bag and hands tied. It doesn’t end there. Then comes the boldest and well-thought-out shot – of a headless body being burnt. It doesn’t end there either. He treats her head like a football, pocketing it at a nearby goalpost. The stretch is graphic and is nothing we have seen in cinema. It’s alluring details make it one of the rare and fascinating opening scenes…

A game designer by profession, Swapna (Taapsee Pannu in a remarkable performance with great resistance) lives in a cocoon, alienated from human contact. She hasn’t visited her parents in ages and lives with her housemaid Kala (Vinodhini Vaidhyanathan), who, thankfully, brings lightness to an otherwise dark (no pun intended) subject. Swapna has premonitions about New Year’s Eve and she’s occupied by those troubled thoughts. We learn about this when she’s traumatised by the presence of darkness. She is nyctophobic and seeks help from a psychologist, who puts her condition in medical terms: Anniversary reaction – a result of a post-traumatic event. Which means that every day closer to the New Year, her condition worsens. I loved Ashwin’s idea of communicating this through a minimalist poster. Swapna and Kala are outside the clinic and the background has a series of images, showing different phases of lunar eclipse. Perhaps to explain Swapna’s emotional state?

One way to look at Game Over is from the perspective of a gamer. It’s largely set in a fictional world, where the events that unfold in the narrative are actual plots points of a video game. In fact, a poster says, “What if life is a video game and déjà vu are just check points?” Is she hallucinating? We don’t know this for sure, except but the fact that Swapna is a compulsive gamer, and often finds her obsessing over Pac-Man. It’s an interesting choice of a game, for Pac-Man is a superb allegory on her. Structured like a game, she’s enclosed in a maze called life, with three Gothic-like figures after her head. There’s a constant hint about Swapna’s past that seeps into the narrative more than once. It’s indicative of a harrowing incident that stripped Swapna of her sanity. Her past is served through voice-overs and Swapna says, “I wish I could go back and mend things. However, life doesn’t work that way.”

But what if there was an option to restart, like in the gaming world? Would Swapna fight back? Game Over is essentially an all-women world, where men hardly exists. Writers Ashwin Saravanan and Kavvya Ramkumar avoid stereotypes and make a powerful statement about fighting your inner demons. The closest movie I can think of in this genre is Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!

Game Over starts off like a murder mystery story, but midway into the movie; it comes across as a psychological horror. Of course, genre is irrelevant for a movie, whose imaginative ideas are broader and enormous. Take this scene for instance. When we are introduced to Swapna’s lifestyle, there’s a split-second shot of a swing outside her house. You may feel it’s oddly placed, but the shot has a mind-blowing relevance in the second half. And it’s chilling and terrifying (Ron Ethan Yohann’s mystic score is even more haunting) when you think about it. The film isn’t free from narrative issues. I wasn’t too convinced by the tattoo angle. Although you could argue that it is a permanent stain/mark left on Swapna. Anything more, would spoil the fun for you.

I really wished Ashwin had given Swapna a closure. But in life, we don’t have a restart button, do we?

Whose narrative is J&K’s delimitation, asks KCSDS

0

Srinagar, June 14, : Prominent civil society group, Kashmir Center for Social and Development Studies (KCSDS) on Thursday alleged that “delimitation of assembly constituencies was the new agenda floated by Sangh Parivar and its drooling blind followers.”

In a statement issued here, KCSDS spokesperson warned government against any such misadventure as it is goaded on to act by them against all principles of justice in a democracy.

“Aggressive TV debates, columns, opinions and views have started appearing in print and social media providing the new government in effect to turn the numerical majority into a political minority in Jammu and Kashmir,” a statement issue here said.

“Imaginary grounds, bizarre justifications, outlandish claims are peddled to transplant brute majoritarianism of India in Kashmir to further politically disempower the Muslim majority.” “And yet the government intriguingly comes up with the allegation that it is Kashmiri political parties who are raking up the issue to deceive people.”

The KCSDS spokesperson said that the “delimitation of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly seats will end the partisanship that favors Kashmir. He has not only twisted facts and figures to justify the constitution of a delimitation commission to reorganize State Assembly constituencies to give double the seats to Jammu from that of Kashmir but given weird, absolutely undemocratic and completely unjust formulas to make minority into a majority.”

“We want to tell this Government that every day new narratives are manufactured in New Delhi through TV debates and social and print media to dislodge, disempower and denigrate Kashmiris to obfuscate their struggle for their rights,” KCSDS spokesperson said, adding “We are not fond of manufacturing false narratives. We have truth on our side for which we are struggling. We are compelled to respond to the falsehoods being perpetrated every day. We want to live in just peace which could dawn only by restoring people’s rights and not by snatching then under one pretext or the other.”

There are also reports about irregularities in funds in several schemes,” the official said. (KNS)

India is still hell bent to suppress the freedom sentiments of the people of Kashmir by engaging its military power so it has become highly imperative for the international community to prevail upon India for an early resolution of Kashmir dispute and fulfill its pledges and commitments as recorded before the United Nations, he added.

Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman castigating Indian occupation forces for the grave violation of human rights in the nook and corner of the state of Jammu and Kashmir demanded a high probe by the United Nations Human Rights Council, Amnesty International, Asia Watch and International Red Cross Committee and set a war crime tribunal to investigate the genocide, rape and molestation of women , destruction of residential houses and other valuable properties, showering bullets and pellets during the cordon and search operations carries out by the Indian occupation forces against the subjugated people of Kashmir.

If India Gives Kashmiris Their Right, There Would Be No Resistance: UJC Chief Syed Salahuddin

United Jihad Council (UJC) chief Syed Salahuddin on Friday termed the statement of Governor S P Malik as far from reality saying it is aimed at misleading the world community.

Malik had on Thursday said that the attack by militants on CRPF personnel at Anantnag was carried on Pakistan’s orders.

Syed Salahuddin in a statement issued to GNS said: “Eight lakh Indian forces are carrying out atrocities against the people of Kashmir and when the mujahideen retaliate, the Indian leadership blames Pakistan.”

The UJC chief said the attacks of Pulwama in February and now Anantnag were carried out by local militants.

He said the” enormous atrocities” on Kashmiris have forced them to become Fidayeens.

Syed Salahuddin strongly reacted against the statement of S P Malik wherein he termed the Anantnag attack as threat to Amarnath yatra.

“This is an attempt to tarnish the communal fabric of Kashmir,” he said and strongly condemned the Governor’s “mentality”.

The UJC chief said Jammu & Kashmir is an abode of different religions and that Kashmiri Muslims have always been the best hosts to yatris.

“It is India itself where there is intolerance towards minorities,” he said.

Syed Salahuddin, who is also the chief of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, said it is New Delhi’s intransigence that has forced Kashmiris toward armed resistance.

If India implements the UN resolutions on Kashmir and gives the people of the State their right of choosing their destiny, the situation would be different and there would be no resistance, he said.

“The struggle at all fronts will continue till the goal is achieved,” he added.

Meanwhile, Syed Salahuddin has paid tributes to those killed recently saying their “pious blood” won’t go waste. (GNS)
