People face ‘inconvenience, harassment’ during convoy movement on Kashmir roads

0

Srinagar, Apr 2, : Commuters face immense problems during the movement of convoys on Kashmir highway in South and North Kashmir. They have been accusing soldiers and troopers of harassment. The ‘unruly’ behavior of troopers on highway often leads to arguments and sometimes commuters are being thrashed for questioning the ‘diktats’ of forces personnel.

“We are really living in Hell and the behavior of troopers with us on daily basis makes us feel that we have been enslaved and stripped off our dignity and honour,” said a driver Showkat Ahmed who plies on Srinagar-Anantnag route.

“The soldiers guarding highway stop us 30 minutes before the arrival of any convoy. We are not allowed to go and forced to wait for over 30 minutes even after the disappearance of the Convoy from the roads,” said another driver.

The commuters allege that they face harassment on daily basis. “We receive abuses and invectives from troopers and sometimes even we are being thrashed and our vehicles damaged,” they said while talking to news agency near protest site at Letapora where CRPF personnel thrashed school students.

A school bus belonging to Hajahad High School Awantipora was not allowed to move ahead despite an official order by the authorities that school buses and ambulances shall be allowed to move during the convoy.  However when the students protest the CRPF men deployed thrashed many of them including a minor girl.

Pertinently, after the February 14 attack at Lethpora central government issued a circular barring traffic movement during the movement of any convoy. Since then, a large number of videos are viral showing troopers thrashing drivers, damaging vehicles and even stopping ambulances during the convoy movement. Though Army have termed these allegations baseless but the scenes on the ground depicts a different story. “The journey that I used to complete in an hour takes now 2 hours. I am being stopped at different intersections because of the convoy movement,” said a businessman from Baramulla.

“The situation today reminds me of 1990’s when were directed to alight from our vehicles and forced to walk by foot for a kilometer with our hands up. It was late Mufti Muhammad Syed, the then Chief Minister who stopped that practice,” he added.

After the Letapora attack, people have been facing lot of incontinence. “My village used to get connected to highway through a link road but recently that was dug up by authorities.

Government closed over 18 link roads leading to Srinagar-Jammu highway stretch between Srinagar and Qazigund after the Letapora attack.

These link roads were notified by the authorities as threat to highway security have already been dug by the RAMKY Infrastructure Limited.

“We are in a quagmire and we don’t know what to do,” said a protester at Letapora. (CNS)

Fake News In Elections: Now Tip Off WhatsApp About It Using ‘Tipline’

0

WhatsApp on Tuesday launched a service in India where over 200 million users in the country can tip off fake news, misinformation and rumours related to elections.

Launched by PROTO, a media skilling start-up, the tipline will help create a database of rumours to study misinformation during elections for Checkpoint — a research project commissioned by WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned company said in a statement.

People in India can submit misinformation or rumours to the “Checkpoint Tipline on WhatsApp” at +91-9643-000-888.
Dig Deeper Media and Meedan, who have previously worked on misinformation-related projects around the world, are helping PROTO to develop the verification and research frameworks for India.

“The goal of this project is to study the misinformation phenomenon at scale — natively in WhatsApp,” said PROTO’s founders Ritvvij Parrikh and Nasr ul Hadi.

When a WhatsApp user shares a suspicious message with the tipline, PROTO’s verification centre will seek to respond and inform the user if the claim made in the message shared is verified or not.

The response will indicate if information is classified as true, false, misleading, disputed or out of scope and include any other related information that is available.

“The centre can review rumours in the form of pictures, video links or text and will cover four regional languages including Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam, other than English,” said WhatsApp.

Following the project, PROTO aims to submit learnings to the International Center for Journalists to help other organisations learn from the design and operations of this project.

“The research from this initiative will help create a global benchmark for those wishing to tackle misinformation in their own markets,” said Fergus Bell, Founder and CEO, Dig Deeper Media.(IANS)

Article 370 pleas listed before Supreme Court today

0

SRINAGAR: Pleas challenging the constitutional validity of Article 370 which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir are listed before the Supreme Court on April 2.

It has been learnt that the case “figures at item number 5 in the miscellaneous list of April 2” before a bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

“There is constitutional bench today (Tuesday) and if it continues without any break, then there is no chance for this case to come up for hearing,” a source said. “However, if the bench breaks for any reason, the case may come up for hearing”.

On January 14 this year, the Supreme Court had tagged a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and lawyer Ashwini Upadhyay against Article 370 with another similar petition filed by Kumari Vijayalakshmi Jha.

The court had listed the matter for hearing on April 2.

Upadhyay has filed the PIL against Article 370 which also pleads that the separate constitution of Jammu and Kashmir was “arbitrary” and “unconstitutional” on grounds that it was against the “supremacy of the constitution of India and contrary to dictum of one nation, one constitution, one national anthem and one national flag”. Upadhyay has contended that the special provision was “temporary” in nature at the time of framing of the constitution and Article 370(3) lapsed with the dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir constituent assembly on January 26, 1957.
