SRINAGAR, Mar 18: The National conference vice president and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Monday alleged that officers of Jammu and Kashmir favouring early Assembly elections were being browbeaten and threatened by a lobby of senior officers who oppose such a move.

In a series of tweets, Omar wrote: “One day we will talk about the cabal of officers in J&K who for their own selfish reasons have taken it upon themselves to scuttle democracy in the state.”

“Some have no stakes in the state & some are looking at post retirement postings in cushy appointments. Whatever their reasons they have chosen to put their personal interest ahead of the greater good,” Omar said.

“I’m shocked to hear how officers who have supported early assembly elections are being browbeaten & threatened using their performance appraisals against them to get them to toe the line”

“No honest officer should fear these threats. We must put the greater good ahead of our personal preferences & benefits.

Those people making the threats will not remain in the state for very long,” Omar Tweeted. Pertinently, all mainstream parties in the state except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) favour simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the state.

Srinagar, March 18: Private Schools’ Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) today expressed its concern over the growing misuse of mobile phones by children in homes and schools alike, as the trend is not only killing the creativity among children and teens but also pushing them towards moral degradation and other ills.

The Association after deliberations with several schools and experts have decided to take several steps including imposition of fines, confiscation of mobile phones and counselling, to confront the menace. “With very passing day the growing use of mobile phones, e-games and other such applications by our students are having disastrous impact on them. Be it mobile games or video creating applications, uncontrolled use has become a huge problem. It not only distracts students from academics, but affects his health and leads to many social ills,” said G N Var chairman PSAJK. “We are taking remedial measures and for its to be successful we need cooperation from parents too.”

The Association has decided to ban the mobile phones and other such electronic gadgets in school premises. “Anybody found using these mobile phones will be subjected to fine besides confiscation of mobile phones, by the respective school authorities. The fine will increase proportionately for repeat offenders. For repeat offenders the parents will be summoned to schools too,” said Var. “At homes too, the screen time of students has to be restricted and here parents need to do their effort. There is need of strict parental watch on use of mobiles by their wards.”

The Association said that modern technology has brought lot of benefits but at the same time it has its disadvantages if used without care. “The excess screen time is killing creativity among students and this will become worse with every passing day. Such are the bad effects of these gadgets that tech giants like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs used to keep their children away from these phones,” said Var. “

The Associations said that besides having negative effect on health, the mobile phones are also leading to moral degradation and loss of social values among students particularly teenagers. “Teenagers are attracted to such devices but without parental watch they particularly girls can land themselves in severe troubles,” said Var. “There have already been some incidents involving mobile phones and steps need to be taken before it goes out of hand.”

Citing global studies, the Association said that early introduction to electronic devices, such as smartphones and tablets, is linked to speech delays in toddlers, reduced sleep and delayed sleep onset. Older children, including teenagers, are also feeling the negative effects of screen time, with poor sleep quality and higher incidences depression (related to social media use in teens).

The Association is also in talks with subject specialists and course is being prepared for counselling the students against ill-effects of mobile phones. “We have also appealed the schools to prepare best material available on internet to tackle the growing use of mobiles even by toddlers and make students understand about its impact,” said Var. “For our efforts to succeed we also need cooperation from parents. They too need to control their screen time and keep a watch on their wards when it comes to use of internet.”

‘I love him as a person’: Christchurch mosque attack victim’s husband forgives terrorist

0

A man whose wife was killed in the Christchurch attack has said he harbours no hatred toward the terrorist, insisting that forgiveness is the best path forward.

“I would say to him ‘I love him as a person’,” Farid Ahmad was quoted as saying by AFP. “I could not accept what he did. What he did was a wrong thing.”

Asked if he forgave the 28-year-old white supremacist suspect, he said: “Of course. The best thing is forgiveness, generosity, loving and caring, positivity.”

Husna Ahmad, 44, was killed at the Al Noor mosque — the first of two targeted by the gunman.

Mr. Ahmad and his wife emigrated from Bangladesh to New Zealand in 1990 and have one daughter.

When the shooting started, Husna helped several people escape from the women’s and children’s hall. “She was screaming ‘come this way, hurry up’, and she took many children and ladies towards a safe garden,” Mr. Ahmad said.

“Then she was coming back for checking about me, because I was in a wheelchair, and as she was approaching the gate she was shot. She was busy saving lives, forgetting about herself.” Mr. Ahmad, 59, who has been confined to a wheelchair since being hit by a drunk driver in 1998, believes he escaped the hail of bullets because the gunman was focussed on other targets.

Mr. Ahmad did not see his wife when he left the mosque and only learned of her death after someone photographed her body. “Her picture was out in the social media, so somebody showed me the picture and I identified quite easily.”

If he were able to sit down with the suspected mass murderer, he said he would encourage him to rethink his outlook on life.

“I will tell him that inside him he has great potential to be a generous person, to be a kind person, to be a person who would save people, save humanity rather than destroy them,” he said.

“I want him to look for that positive attitude in him, and I hope and I pray for him he would be a great civilian one day. I don’t have any grudge.”
