21 soldiers dead as gunmen storm Mali army camp

0

Bamako (AFP) – Suspected jihadists killed 21 Malian soldiers in a raid on an army camp in central Mali on Sunday, military sources said, after a dawn attack that the armed forces believe was led by a deserter.

Driving cars and motorbikes, the attackers stormed Dioura army camp in the Mopti region, in the latest assault on the military as the country grapples with the spread of extremist groups and instability.

“The provisional toll is 21 bodies discovered,” said a military source, in figures also confirmed by a local legislator.

The attack was carried out “by terrorist groups under the command of Ba Ag Moussa, a deserter army colonel”, according to the Malian armed forces.

A second military source said there was “a lot of damage”.

“Our men responded. I saw at least four bodies on the ground,” he said.

President Ibrahim Boubakar Keita, on Twitter, said the Malian people were “united against terrible acts”, without giving any death toll.

Once a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa, Mali in recent years has been dogged by a coup, civil war and Islamist terrorism.

Extremists linked to Al-Qaeda took control of Mali’s desert north in early 2012, but were largely driven out in a French-led military operation launched in January 2013.

In June 2015, Mali’s government signed a peace agreement with some armed groups, but the jihadists remain active, and large tracts of the country remain lawless.

Despite the presence of UN peacekeepers, a strong French military contingent and the creation of a five-nation military force in the region, jihadist violence has not abated in Mali.

“Despite significant international efforts, the security situation has continued to deteriorate with an increase in the number of terrorist attacks,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a report sent to the Security Council this month.

In 2018, there were 237 terror attacks, up from 226 in 2017 and 183 the previous year, said the report.

A spokesperson of the League in a statement issued to GNS said the judge fixed the next hearing of the case on 29-03-2019.

After the hearing, Masarat Aalam was taken back to Jammu jail, he said.

Referring to prolonged and “unlawful” detention of Masarat Aalam, the spokesperson said, “Aalam is languishing in jail since long, however, it is quite disheartening that he is being subjected to vengeance by state authorities.”

He said jailing Masarat Aalam on “concocted charges” and repeatedly slapping PSA on him to prolong his incarceration is “nothing but a travesty of justice and democracy”.

“Masarat Aalam has been booked under fabricated cases. A conspiracy is being hatched to keep him behind the bars. Authorities don’t want to free him. New ways and means are being devised to harass and intimidate him, but he will never succumb,” the spokesperson maintained.

Time to rid J&K of dynastic rule: Sajad Lone

0

Srinagar, Mar 17 : Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone Sunday said it is imperative to eradicate dynasty rule for overall development and empowerment of the people of the state.

National Conference has a history of indulging in labelling and name calling of their opponents. When someone outside the Abdullah dynasty aspires to represent the people of the state, the entire party leadership casts aspersions, level allegation even to the extent of inciting murder. Such utterings have cost us many lives in the past and they are trying to repeat the same now.

Reiterating his demand for revocation of ban on JeI, Sajad said that providing space for opposing political thoughts and ideologies is imperative in a democracy.

“Banning of Jamaat-e-Islami will further undermine the democratic process in J&K minimize any chances for peace and reconciliation in the valley. The central government instead of taking concrete measure to restore peace in the valley is cracking down on opposing political ideologies. Our democracy allows everyone to have his/her political opinions and we cannot deny space any organization. The government must revoke this ban at the earliest”, he added.

He further added that JeI has been a victim of political vindictiveness and such measures have failed in the past as well.

“The brazen rigging of 1987 polls pushed them away from mainstream politics into the separatism camp. Now after 32 years you are punishing the victim again instead of the culprits of 1987 rigging, who are still pampered and encouraged. Until the perpetrators of 1987 rigging are brought to book, things won’t change”, he added.
