Panaji, Mar 17 (PTI) Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar died at his private residence near here Sunday. He was 63.

Parrikar is survived by two sons and their families.

“Chief Minister passed away around 6.40 pm Sunday,” a senior state government official told PTI.

The BJP stalwart’s health, which has been fluctuating for a year, took a turn for the worse in the past two days.

In a tweet, President Ram Nath Kovind said, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, chief minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity.

“An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and India will not be forgotten,” the President tweeted from his official handle.

Sources said former defence minister Parrikar had been on life support system since late Saturday night.

Parrikar had been unwell since February 2018 when he was diagnosed with a pancreatic ailment.

Omar Will Be Chief Ministerial Candidate In JK: Abdullah

0

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah Sunday announced that his son, Omar Abdullah, will be the party’s chief ministerial candidate.

Kick-starting the party’s campaign for the Lok Sabha polls here, the party chief said he will represent Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament.

“I will not be the chief minister. The chief minister will be Omar Abdullah as he is young. I am old and I cannot match the energy of young people, but he can. I will go to Parliament and I have full faith that I will be there,” Abdullah said addressing a party rally at Bahu Fort here.

Accusing the BJP of dividing the people and spreading hatred in the country, he said that the country had to be strengthened within and there was a need to fight polarisation, hatred and injustice.

The former chief minister asked people to support those candidates who could run the country based on the principle of equality.

He also countered allegations that the National Conference discriminated against Jammu and Ladakh.

In a veiled dig at the BJP, he said the state emblem of ‘Lotus’ was testimony that the state never discriminated against anyone unlike the party, which shared the lotus emblem, and was “dividing people on the basis of religion and spreading hatred”.

“Let us pray for unity and love, let us pray that those people come to power (at the Centre) who can understand the pain of the people and do not only raise slogans as slogans cannot run this country,” he said.

Without naming the BJP, Abdullah alleged that the party had purchased television channels and newspaper offices and unleashed a propaganda to mislead the people.

Slamming the BJP and the RSS for accusing him of being a Pakistani, he said recently his party worker was killed because he was holding the tricolour.

Continuing his tirade against the BJP-led NDA, he claimed that when CRPF personnel were killed in Chhattisgarh, no one from the BJP visited them to offer floral tributes.

On the Ram temple issue, he asked the Centre who was stopping it from constructing the shrine at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

“Muslims are not against the temple’s construction but they (leaders) are using the issue to spread hatred and divide people. Was the Ram only of Hindus? Your books teach that he belonged to everyone, just like Muslims believe that Allah is not only for Muslims but for the entire world,” he said.

He hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking what happened to the poll promises made by his party in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

“Today I want to ask Modi whether inflation has come down or increased for petrol and diesel during his rule. What happened to the promise of two crore jobs each year and how many from the state got employment in the past five years? What happened to the promise of depositing Rs 15 lakh to the account of each family,” he asked.

“How long will we hear this falsehood,” the former chief minister asked.

Abdullah said Indus Water treaty between India and Pakistan had resulted in injustice to the state as “we are not able to use our water resources to the advantage of the people”.

“It (Centre) was planning to stop the flow of the river Chenab to Pakistan but reality dawned upon them because it is not possible given the treaty,” he said.

Abdullah criticised the BJP for not completing any project to ensure drinking water to the people of Jammu who have to buy it for daily use.(PTI)

What should we do? you tell us” Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo can be heard asking an alleged informer in a video that has gone viral on social media.

Holding a gun and wearing a Pheran, Naikoo can be seen talking to an alleged informer.

Unlike other videos of the militant outfit, this video does not involve any violence or harsh language nor does Naikoo resort to any interrogation.

But rather Naikoo gives an impression of holding a grudge against the man who appears to be middle aged.

Sporting a beard, the man also seems to be calm, as Naikoo in a low tone goes on seeking answers from the alleged informer who according to Naikoo had been an informer of four encounters including one at his home.

The bearded man nods occasionally while playing with his beard.

“We know that you have families, so we forgive you even for getting our militant colleagues killed for one or two times, but this cannot happen always,” Naikoo is heard telling this man.

Naikoo also reminds the man of his uncle’s “martyrdom’ ” Isn’t your uncle a martyr, don’t you realise that?” Naikoo asks the man.

“Many people of Kashmir call us (Militants) terrorists and think we are inhumane, but it is not that we kill informers at the first time, we forgive them and provide them a chance to retrospect, tell us what should we do? ” Riyaz Naikoo is heard saying in this video.

“Militants do not want to orphan anyone, but you force us to. What should we do? we have forgiven you many a times, even when you informed army about militant presence in many South Kashmir areas, we forgave you in 2016 because you have young children, but you have been repeating your mistakes and getting Militants killed,” Riyaz Naikoo is heard telling this man.

“We are humans too. We have conscience too. We do not like spilling blood, your death will do me no good, I will not earn anything by killing you, but we cannot forgive you every time,” Riyaz tells the man.

According to The Kashmiriyat the man in the video is Manzoor Ahmad Lone, a resident of Dogripora.

“The way in which the government is militating against the youth of the state, the situation has gone back to what was being witnessed prior to 2002 with nocturnal raids, arrests, tortures, constitutional frauds becoming order of the day,” Madni said.

He demanded that the torture being inflicted upon the youth with a sole objective to push them towards the wall must stop without further delay and those at the helm should understand that such iron fist and trigger happy approaches have only proved counterproductive in the past. “Repeating the same old mistakes will prove calamitous. The only way out is to initiate meaningful dialogue with all stake holders and resolve Kashmir at an earliest to stop the vicious cycle of violence,” said Madni.

Separatist Leader Raises Objection Over Shah Faesal’s Party Name

0

The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement (JKPM) has strongly objected to the launching of a new political outfit under the identical name and style by the former bureaucrat Dr. Shah Faisal and urged him to make a modification in the name of his party which he launched on Sunday.

Senior APHC leader and chairman of the JKPM Mir Shahid Saleem said that a political outfit under the name and style of “Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement” (JKPM) has been functioning for the past twenty years in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the party was launched on April 4, 2000 at press club Jammu. After being launched, the JKPM became a constituent member of the APHC and presently is a member its executive body.

The JKPM Chairman Mir Shahid Saleem taking a strong exception to the party name being used by Dr. Faisal called upon him to make a necessary modification in the name of his newly launched political party to avoid unnecessary confusion.

Mir Shahid Saleem said that during a conversation Dr Shah Faisal agreed to make a change in the party name failing which JKPM would be forced to go to the electronic and print media at large to prove its claim.

Mir Shahid Saleem said that this was unbecoming and against the basic ethics for a man like Dr. Shah Faisal to commit a sort of plagiarism, who has always been talking of moral high grounds in the public life. He wondered why a tech savvy Dr. Faisal could not Google out the name of Jammu Kashmir People’s Movement which has been in use for the past over twenty years. (KNS)
