Repressive measures, arrests won’t yield any result: Dr. Farooq

0

Srinagar, Mar 08 : Former chief minister and National Conference (NC) patron, Dr. Farooq Abdullah on Friday said that repressive measures and arrests in Jammu and Kashmir won’t yield any results, saying that dialogue is the only way to resolve issues.

The party president while addressing a gathering after former IGP Shafkat Ali Watali joined National conference said, “Arresting people will not resolve anything in a sensitive state like J&K where situation is always on the boil. Such measures will not help in creating a peaceful atmosphere here. It is only dialogue that holds the way out.”

Dr. Abdullah added that repressive measures won’t prove effective to normalize situation in Kashmir. “Banning socio-religious out fits also won’t help. During Jagmohan’s time JeI was banned, their schools and institutions were ceased. What was then governor able to achieve by banning JeI? Eventually they had to hold parleys with them. It is therefore reconciliation and rapprochement only that will solve all the contentious issues,” he said.
Lashing out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dr. Abdullah asserted that the ruling party is trying to polarize the electorate in the country in view of forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, saying “such a tendency will prove detrimental to the unity and integrity of the country.”

Dr. Abdullah who is also Member of Parliament said, “BJP is trying to create a rift between different communities. Such a trend will prove detrimental to the pluralistic ethos of our country. India belongs to all and we all have to live in peace and harmony with each other.”

“Minorities in the country are feeling alienated and threatened more than ever. It’s for the PM to address these concerns immediately and put a sense of security among all,” he added.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating India, Pakistan relations, Dr. Abdullah said, “It is for India and Pakistan to maintain amiable atmosphere among themselves. It is our state which becomes the battle field for both the countries. People of our state have to suffer tribulation in view of increased animosity between India and Pakistan.”

He added it is high time for both India and Pakistan to find a solution to the protracted political issue of J&K by giving autonomy to J&K on either sides of the divide.

Meanwhile, NC Vice President and former chief minister Omar Abdullah who was also present on the occasion welcomed new entrant, Watali in the party fold, saying, “I am sure that the party will benefit from the administrative experience and acumen of Watali. I welcome him into the party.”

Among others NC General Secretary Haji Ali Muhammad Sagar, Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, State Secretary Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, North Zone president Muhammad Akbar Lone and YNC vice president Ahsan Pardesi were also present.

India, Pakistan should turn the page, covert crisis into opportunity: China

0

Beijing: India and Pakistan should quickly turn the page following the Pulwama terror attack and convert the present tensions into opportunity for long term improvement in their relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.

Wang also said post-Wuhan summit between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China wants to develop closer ties with India and forge ahead like the “Yangtze and Ganges” rivers despite Beijing’s all weather ties with Pakistan.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after a suicide bomber of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) killed 40 CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district in February 14.

India launched a counter-terror operation in Balakot on February 26. The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in an aerial combat and captured its pilot, who was handed over to India on March 1.

“China hopes Pakistan and India will transform the crisis into opportunity and meet each other halfway,” Wang said.

He was replying to questions on the present India-Pakistan tensions following the Pulwama terror attack and how China plans to carry forward the spirit of last year’s Wuhan summit between Prime Minister and President Xi.

“We advise both the parties to quickly turn the page and seek fundamental, long term improvement in their relations. When confrontation gives way to dialogue and disagreement are settled, we can create a better future through cooperation,” he said.

Recent events focussed international attention on the India-Pakistan relations, he said stating that China played a constructive role to resolve the tensions between the two neighbours.

“China has stressed from the beginning the need to exercise restraint prevent an escalation, find out what has happened and resolve the matter through dialogue,” Wang said adding that Beijing tried to play a mediatory role.

“In the meantime, country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should fully respected. China followed these principle in its mediation and played a constructive role in defusing the tension , he said.

China recently dispatched its Vice Foreign Minister Kong Kong Xuanyou to Pakistan where he held talks with Prime Minister Imran Khan, Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, besides Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, on the India-Pakistan tensions.

His visit coincides with the US, the UK and French application in the 1267 counter terrorism committee of the UNSC to declare JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. If listed by the committee, Azhar would face a global travel ban and asset freeze. the JeM has already been banned by the UN.

Mumbai eye revenge against Goa in ISL semis

0

Mumbai, Mar 8 (PTI) Having suffered two defeats against FC Goa in the league stage, Mumbai City FC would be thirsting for revenge when the two outfits clash in the first-leg semi-final of the Indian Super League on Saturday.

FC Goa had blanked Mumbai 5-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Goa in October, after which the Jorge Costa-coached Mumbai were unbeaten in nine games.

But again it was FC Goa who had snapped their unbeaten run when they defeated them 2-0 at the Mumbai Football Arena here in February.

So when Mumbai take the field with the stakes higher, revenge will also be on their mind, but the hosts know well that they cannot afford to take the visitors lightly.

For the hosts, Modou Sougou has been the star performer having pumped in 12 goals so far.

And a lot will depend on how the Senegalese fares in this key contest.

He, along with Arnold Issako of Congo who has six assists to his credit, form a lethal pair.

With a forward like Brazilian Rafael Bastos and an array of mid-fielders including Sougou, Paulo Machado and Matias Mirabaje to bank on, Mumbai have a strong outfit.

With Romanian Lucian Goian and Subhasish Bose to man it, Mumbai also have a strong defence although it was breached rather easily previously on both the occasions by Goa.

This is an area they would like to tighten up.

The role of experienced custodian Amrinder Singh would also be crucial and he would be hoping to maintain a clean sheet.

Amrinder has been quite impressive in the tournament having 55 saves to his name.

Goa have a lethal weapon in the form of Ferran Corominas, who is the leading goal-scorer in the league, having slotted in 15 goals.

If he is allowed to play as he wants, the Mumbai defence will have a harrowing time.

Apart from Corominas, Goa’s hopes will also be pinned on the performance of Spaniard Edu Bedia, who plays as central mid-fielder and has seven goals to his name.

Along with Bedia, Jackichand Singh, Mandar Rao Dessai and Zaid Krouch are other mid-fielders for Goa.

The Goa defenders and custodian Laxmikant Kattimani also will have to be on their toes against the Mumbai attack with home crowd behind it.

The match starts at 7. 30 PM.
