JKLF protests against Malik’s arrest, says jails can’t deter him

0

Srinagar, Mar 8 : “Jails and incarcerations can not deter leader Muhammad Yasin Malik and other Kashmiris from persuading the path of resistance and freedom,” said Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on Friday.

According to a JKLF statement issued, several of the party leaders on Friday addressed the protesting people at Budshah Chowk, said: “Arbitrary arrests, use of PSA like black laws against political dissent, ban on socio-religious organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami, attempts to fiddle with hereditary state subject law under the pretext of 35A and NIA raids on Kashmiris are all attempts to intimidate Kashmiris and stop our march towards freedom and right to self-determination and are bound to fail.”

The protest, according to the statement, was held on the call issued by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).

The statement said that police on Friday arrested JKLF zonal vice president Muhammad Yasin Butt from his residence. Party’s vice chairman Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi, district presidents Bashir Ahmad Boya, Gulzar Pahalwan, senior members Mushtaq Ahmad Wani, Nadeem Ahmad of Pampore are also in police custody from last many weeks.

The JKLF leaders in their address said: “The manner in which JKLF chairman was manhandled by police at the orders of civil administration, denied to see his mother and sisters, deprived of a compulsory medical checkup and rushed to Kot Bhalwal jail, Jammu is shameful and condemnable.”

They said Yasin Malik is a known heart patient suffering from many other ailments too. “But shockingly at Kot Bhalwal jail, he has been put into solitary confinement. He has been locked inside a barrack and singled out from all other inmates. This revengeful act of so-called rulers and their authorities is a deliberate attempt to damage his health,” they said, adding, “We caution the so-called rulers to refrain from all such undemocratic and unethical acts.”

“Suppression of political dissent by police and military might and claims of being biggest democracy in the world are two poles apart and suppression unleashed by Indian state against Kashmiris is a glaring example of the fragility of its democracy in Jammu Kashmir,” the speakers said.

Hurriyat (M) denounces sealing of Jamia Masjid for 2nd Friday

Srinagar, Mar 8 : Hurriyat Conference (M) has strongly denounced the sealing of Kashmir’s grand masjid, Jamia Masjid, for the second consecutive week and not allowing its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to address the faithful during Friday prayers there by imposing curfew in many areas of Srinagar.

A Hurriyat (M) spokesperson in a statement issued to GNS said that on the call of Joint Resistance leadership (JRL), a protest rally was staged at Lal Bazar, Srinagar that was led by Muhammad Shafi Khan against the “illegal” slapping of PSA on resistance leaders including JKLF chief Muhammad Yasin Malik and shifting him to Kot Balwal and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, moves to tinker with the hereditary state-subject law and the NIA raids against leadership.

Speaking on the occasion, Khan, according to the statement, said the leadership condemns the “authoritarian approach” of government adding that the “repressive ploys” being adopted by New Delhi to force people and leadership into submission won’t succeed as Kashmir dispute is internationally acknowledged and will have to be resolved.

Meanwhile, on the eve of International Women’s Day, Hurriyat (M) said: “While entire world is observing this day acknowledging the rights and contribution of women across the globe, in Jammu and Kashmir women are bearing the maximum the brunt of repression due to non resolution of the issue.”

“The people of Kashmir today remember the valour and resilience of the women of village Kunan Poshpora. While the cruelty inflicted on Neolofar, Asiya, Asifa and so many of our women and young girls who have been killed or whose the eye-sight has been snatched by use of lethal pellets including Insha Mustaq and minor Hiba all awaiting justice and suffering as a consequence of lingering Kashmir dispute,” the statement said.

The amalgam urged the world human rights groups to take note of the “crimes against women” being committed in Kashmir and play their role in stopping them.

Kashmir Situation Better Than Last Year’s Panchayat Polls, ECI Told

Nadeem Nadu

Srinagar, March 08 : The state’s security establishment has favoured on-time elections in Jammu and Kashmir, underlining the situation in the state was better than during the recently concluded Panchayat elections.

A senior officer who was part of the deliberations with Election Commission of India earlier this week told that the poll body was informed that situation in the state especially Kashmir was better than during the last year’s Panchayat and Urban Local Body elections. “The Lethpora Pulwama incident has cast the shadow over the situation otherwise the situation at present is better than during the last elections (Panchayat),” he said. The ECI has already decided to call union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and other top officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for consultation to decide on holding Assembly and Lok Sabha polls in the state simultaneously.

Jammu and Kashmir is under president’s rule followed by governor rule, imposed on June 19 last year after the state plunged into a political crisis when the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government was reduced to minority following withdrawal of support by the 25-member BJP in the state.

The assembly had been kept under the suspended animation then. However, the Governor Satya Pal Malik on November 21 dissolved the 87-member state assembly after the Peoples Democratic Party, supported by the Congress and arch-rivals National Conference, tried to stake claim to form the government.

The Governor had cited “extensive horse-trading and the impossibility of forming a stable government by coming together of political parties with opposing political ideologies and serious doubts about the longevity of any such arrangement where there are competing claims of majority” as the reasons behind the decision. The term of the present Lok Sabha ends on June 3.

While there is a view that the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections can be held along with the Lok Sabha polls, but a lot depends on the complex security situation in the state given the heightened tension along the India-Pakistan border.

The J&K assembly’s six-year term was to end on March 16, 2021, but it got dissolved after a ruling coalition between the PDP and the BJP fell apart.  (PTK)

Worry of ominous defeat evident in Omar’s statements: BJP

0

Srinagar, Mar 08 : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday said that Omar Abdullah, former Chief Minister and Vice-President of National Conference (NC) is so shattered by the imminent danger of being swept away in the forthcoming elections that he has resorted to making inflammatory statements meant at polarising the society accused.

Brig Gupta said that some of the recent statements of Omar Abdullah like “why third front is being formed only in Kashmir not in Ladakh and Jammu” or “when Indians don’t accept Kashmiris then how can they expect Kashmiris will say they are an integral part of India” or his tweet blaming BJP for the assault on Kashmiri dry fruit sellers in Lucknow are part of a well-orchestrated campaign to create further alienation among the different communities in the state in order to revive the sinking electoral fortunes of NC.

“Why Omar is mortally scared of the emergence of alternative political forces in Kashmir? He is well aware that the days when his party could fool the people through hollow and false promises are gone. Kashmiris have understood the opportunistic politics of NC and are determined to wipe out the party in the forthcoming elections. The people of Kashmir are eagerly looking for alternatives which the third front provides and that is the reason of Omar’s annoyance over emergence of third front in Kashmir clarified Brig Gupta. As far as Jammu and Ladakh are concerned they have their own political dynamics and Omar must leave it to the people of these regions to decide. NC has always been scared of the opposition, even his grandfather Sheikh Abdullah wanted to make J&K “a single- Party state” since he abhorred opposition,” said Brig Gupta.

He said “As far as “Indians not willing to own Kashmiris” is concerned, nothing can be farther from truth than this statement of Omar. It is the large-heartedness and magnanimity of Indians that Kashmiris can acquire property and settle in any part of the country despite the fact they are not allowed to do so in Kashmir. By making such statements Omar is further widening the rift instead of bridging the gap.”
Brig Gupta blamed Omar for jumping the gun by blaming BJP for the assault on Kashmiri dry fruit sellers in Lucknow.

“Mere wearing of Saffron clothes does not imply that the accused belong to BJP. There are many inimical political forces within the country who are desperate to arouse communal passions in run up to the forthcoming elections in order to malign BJP and they can go to any extent to achieve their objective. It could well be the handiwork of opposition parties which are scared of BJP’s massive popularity in UP, said Brig Gupta.”
He said Omar’s assertion that senior BJP leadership is deliberately refraining from condemning attacks on Kashmiris is also not true. Brig Gupta drew the attention of Omar to the tweet of Finance Minister ArunJaitely condemning the attack on innocent Kashmiris and statements of many other senior leaders including the Home Minister.
