Press Trust of India

New Delhi, Feb 20 :Two Kashmiri shawl vendors have claimed they were beaten up and called “stone pelters” by unidentified men on a train, forcing them to cut short their business trip to Rohtak, officials said Wednesday.

The incident comes amid reports of some Kashmiri people claiming they were being targeted in many parts of the country in the aftermath of the February 14 terror attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama that left over 40 personnel dead. “Three Kashmiri shawl vendors boarded the general compartment of a local train from Sarai Rohilla station at around 10.40 am for a business trip to Sampla in Haryana. They claimed they were pushed into a corner and called ‘stone pelters’,” said Dinesh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways).

“When they objected, the accused allegedly abused and slapped two Kashmiri vendors. The attackers said ‘you hurl stones there (in Kashmir) and come to earn a livelihood here’. Other passengers also joined in and created a ruckus,” the DCP (Railways) said.

Thereafter, the three Kashmiri men de-boarded at Nangloi station, leaving their bags containing shawls and suits worth around Rs 2 lakh in the train, Gupta added.

A case has been registered and the matter is being probed, he said.

The three men said they came to Delhi in December last year and were staying in Sarai Rohilla. They have been coming here for business purposes for the last 10 years.

The three Kashmiri men approached Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat through their local MLA. Karat helped them file a complaint with police.

“The men claimed the attackers told them they were from the armed forces. They said ‘you are the ones who killed our men’.

“Around 15-20 other men also joined in and beat the Kashmiri men with belts. The incident took place when they were crossing Mangolpuri. One of the three Kashmiris suffered severe head injuries and another sustained wounds on face,” she said.

Police said the attackers were yet to be identified, and it was not clear if they were from the armed forces since they were in plain clothes.

NIA releases money seized from Srinagar businessman in 2017

0

Srinagar, Feb 20 (GNS): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has released the money it had seized from a businessman from Srinagar in 2017.

The money, Rs 14.13 lakhs, were seized from the businessman Imran Syed Kawoosa by the India’s premier investigation agency on 6 September 2017 as part of its investigations in the 2016 funding case and were released on the directions by Court of Special Judge, NIA Jammu.

The order was passed by the court on an application filed by Kawoosa through his counsels Mustahsun Mattu and Gagan Deep Sharma, contending that the money was his legal “business sale” and proven by all the GST bills and other documents.

The applicant, who is proprietor of Kawoosa and Sons said he had kept the cash in his home to liquidate the payments of the suppliers.

The NIA, in its reply, had said it no more required the cash for the investigation purpose and the same be released in Kawoosa’s favour.

“…the special public prosecutor, NIA, has stated in the open court (that) NIA has no objection if cash seized in the case is released in favour of its real owner on furnishing his undertaking and indemnity bond,” reads the Court order, copy of which lies with GNS.

“In view of the facts and circumstances of the case and also in view of the no objection stated by NIA for release of (the) amount, the present application is allowed to the limited extent of cash only and the same is ordered to be released in favour of applicant,” it added.

Complying with the Court orders, the NIA released the cash in Kawoosa’s favour at its Delhi headquarters.

It is the first material release in the 2016 funding case in which several arrests including that of businessmen have been made.

In September 2017, NIA had raided around 27 places in Kashmir, New Delhi and Gurugram (Haryana) in connection with the case and seized cash, documents and material from various persons and businessmen. (GNS)

Mob accosts, beats up Kashmir shawl trader in West Bengal

0

A shawl trader from Soibugh area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district has become the latest victim of a string of mob attacks in West Bengal following last week’s bombing on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama which left 49 troopers dead.

Javid Ahmad Khan (27) of Astanpora mohallah of Soibugh was accosted and mercilessly beaten by an abusive mob in Taherpur area of Nadia district last night.

A graphic video of the attack which was posted on social media showed blood oozing out from the nose of Khan as the mob abused and forced him to shout ‘Vande Mataram’.

One of his cousins told Greater Kashmir that Khan was staying at his rented accommodation along with his brother when the mob attack took place around 9 pm last night.

“Both Javid and his brother Mehraj ud Din had closed their shops following tension over Pulwama attack. But last night a mob attacked Javid at his rented accommodation,” he said, adding that the police arrived at the scene after an hour.

“They saved him from the mob and shifted him to a safer location. But before their arrival on the scene Javid was assaulted by the mob,” he said.

Eldest among five siblings, Khan like scores of other Soibugh residents, has been engaged in shawl trading in West Bengal for past many years. “He has been visiting Kolkata for past ten years,” said his cousin.

Police Sub-inspector Avijit Biswas told Greater Kashmir over the phone from Taherpur that Khan was safe now.

“We have shifted him to a safer location in Krishna Nagar. He is absolutely fine,” said Biswas, adding they have taken cognisance of the incident. “We are looking for the attackers,” he said.

The attack on Khan comes just two days after chief minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the workers of the BJP and RSS for a string of assaults in the state, including a mob attack on a teacher who was forced to chant ‘Bharat Mata ki jay’ and issue an apology for his social media post on Pulwama attack.

Similar attacks took place on Kashmir traders at Budh Marg in Bihar last week when a mob vandalized their shops of Kashmiri traders and threatened them to leave the state following an attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama that left 49 troopers dead.

Pulwama attack fallout: Hotels in Agra bar Kashmiris

0

After the string of reports about violence against Kashmiris from across the country in the fallout of Pulwama attack, another image has surfaced on the internet from a hotel in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra stating: ‘KASHMIRIS ARE NOT ALLOWED HARE FOR STAY’, and WE ARE INDIAN, VEER SUPUTRO KO SHRADHANJALI (Homage to our brave sons).

Manager of the hotel, Firdaus Ali, justified the pamphlets issuing the restriction and said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, he took the step as Kashmiris were against India’s defense forces and threw stones at them in Kashmir.

“How can we welcome those who attack our army jawans? We are open to them if they change their attitude towards our army men in Kashmir,” said Mr. Ali, who runs the hotel at Idgah area of Agra.

Rakesh Chauhan, the president of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Agra, condemned the move. According to the reports, Mr. Chauhan admitted he had come to know about two hotels in Idgah area which had decided to deny rooms to Kashmiris. He added that he has asked the local police and district administration to intervene.

“Kashmiris are our brothers and in no way, the move can be justified. Terrorism is affecting Kashmir but residents there cannot be blamed for violence. We have to act against terrorists and not against Kashmiris there,” Mr. Chauhan said while speaking to the Hindustan Times.

Agra Sadar’s additional superintendent of police, who is responsible for the Idgah area, Uday Raj Singh he is unaware of the pamphlets. “We are yet to come across any such restriction placed by hotels,” Mr. Singh said. The police official said he was not clear if police could intervene in such a matter.

Lethpora Attack: Maruti Suzuki Engineers At Ground Zero To Help Probe

0

National Investigation Agency is looking for local Jaish-e-Muhammed militant Mudassir Ahmad Khan for his suspected role in the Pulwama attack, even as it believes that the military grade explosives (RDX) for the bombing might have been brought by one of the groups that infiltrated through the international border in Jammu.

A recent report by NIA on infiltration from Jammu border said that over 35 Jaish and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants had crossed over in the past more than a year.

“We are yet to interrogate any person suspected to be associated with the bombing, but it is our understanding that the planning had taken some months, explosives smuggled in tranches from Jammu border and specialised IED makers travelled to assemble it,” said an officer requesting anonymity.

Sources said Mudassir Khan’s name has been shared by intelligence agencies for being part of the group that executed the bombing and they expect him to give more leads about when the explosives, IED maker(s) and those who supervised the attack travelled to India.

The agency is also taking help of Maruti Suzuki engineers to identify the owners of the Eeco van used in the blast. A metal plate having some numbers on it was found from the blast site. The engineers, who travelled to Srinagar on Monday, are now ascertaining the vehicle’s year of manufacturing, the showroom it was supplied to and the person who bought it.

The video clip of bomber Aadil Ahmad Dar, through which JeM claimed responsibility for the attack, is also being examined by experts from the Chandigarh forensic laboratory as he appears to be reading a script. “The video is being examined for any superimposition, voiceover and modulation,” said an officer.

NIA and J&K police have also examined some local Kashmiris, including those who have operated as over-ground workers (OGWs) for terror outfits in the past, to get clues about the perpetrators.(TOI)
