NDTV suspends editor for Facebook post on Pulwama attack

0

NDTV has suspended one of it editors for a social media post on Thursday’s terror attack that killed 49 CRPF soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The editor in question is one Nidhi Sethi, who had taken to her personal Facebook page to post about the Pulwama attack using a hashtag #HowstheJaish, which was a spin off version of hashtag #HowstheJosh, a popular dialogue from a recent hit Bollywood film Uri The Surgical Strike.

The film was based on the India’s so-called response against Pakistan in 2016 through a surgical strike targeting militants’ targets across the LoC.

Nidhi had written, “Where a grisly 44 has been proven to be greater than the mythical 56 #HowstheJaish.” The use of Jaish was in reference to the militant organisation Jaish-E-Mohammed, which later claimed responsibility for the Pulwama terror attack.

Condemning her action, NDTV tweeted on Friday, “NDTV strongly condemns what a Deputy News Editor of our website posted on her personal Facebook page about the tragic and dastardly Pulwama terror attack. She has been suspended for 2 weeks, effective immediately, while the company’s Disciplinary Committee weighs further action”

Join Heads, join hands and save Kashmir

Er Rasheed

The wedding between NC and PDP ended before honeymoon; it lasted for few hours and that too on TV channels and social media. The moment Governor dissolved the Assembly, NC and PDP started attacking each other again, indulging in an unending blame game. No one ever expected NC or PDP to get stars and moons for the ill-fated Kashmiris, but restoring their dignity to a certain respectable level could have been an achievable target for both the regional parties. Unfortunately by their non-seriousness both have given New Delhi an open field to take on Kashmiris. There is absolute consensus that J&K will get a hung assembly in the upcoming elections, if pre poll alliances between various parties do not take place. While NC and PDP had justified their forming a proposed collation by claiming that it is a move to stop Sang Parivar and its allies, may one ask NC and PDP leadership that has the dissolution of Assembly ensured that BJP and its allies will not come into power in near future. Answer is no, as in case of a hung assembly there is every possibility that things may become worse than they were after 2014 elections or when BJP withdrew support to PDP, and the disintegration of PDP started. The initiative taken by NC and PDP to form a joint coalition though was sabotaged by New Delhi, but the way NC and PDP didn’t resist Governor’s unconstitutional move, it looked eminent that the two parties were more interested in getting the assembly dissolved than forming the government. Their accusations against each other strengthen the argument that PDP and NC want to grab power by any means possible, and protecting rights of the state is never a priority. They may do any posturing to oppose New Delhi’s ill designs but a divided house not only weakens regional forces but also gives New Delhi a free hand to bulldoze rights of Kashmiris further. If Omer Abdullah in his private conversations confesses that NC cannot cross thirty seats and Mehbooba may be stuck at less than half what NC may get, a common man has every right to ask them what next when the ghost is out of bottle. It is obvious both will again beg before BJP and Congress and justify their begging by blaming that Kashmiris did not gave them a decisive mandate and thus will repeat entering into unholy alliances.

If NC and PDP are serious and truly believe in protecting the rights of the state, they have no option but to join hands. However, it is obvious that both these parties are so scared of New Delhi that they don’t want to annoy New Delhi over even petty issues. By not getting majority both NC and PDP get a good excuse to tolerate New Delhi’s utterances and atrocities on Kashmiris. The two parties have already diluted Kashmir cause by raising Autonomy and Self-rule slogans but their joining hands under changing circumstances would have helped Kashmiris to boost their morale. Let the two parties form a joint roadmap to restore confidence among Kashmiris and show New Delhi its place. Removal of AFSPA, abrogation of PSA, reducing IPS and IAS quota, making Mughal road as an alternative highway between Jammu and Kashmir regions, giving divisional status to Pir Panchal and Chinab regions, releasing Masrat Alam, Qasim Faktoo and other political prisoners, abolishing interference of central agencies in J&K, return of power projects, accepting UJC and pro-resistance leadership as main stakeholders and many other vital priorities can become basis for  a common plateform for all the regional forces; this to protect the self-respect of people of the state and ultimately force New Delhi and Islamabad to a peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute.

Pakistan foreign secretary meets P-5 envoys, rejects India’s allegations on Kashmir attack

0

Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua has met the envoys of P-5 nations and rejected India’s allegations of Islamabad’s involvement in the attack on a paramilitary convoy in Jammu and Kashmir.

“FS today briefed P5 Ambassadors at MoFA. Rejected Indian allegations on Pulwama attack,” Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal tweeted on Friday night.

P-5 refers to US, Russia, China, France and UK — which are permanent members of the UN Security Council.

In the meeting with P-5 envoys, Janjua has “noted a familiar Indian pattern of immediate and reflexive assignment of blame on Pakistan without investigations”.

The meeting came hours after India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Friday met at least two dozen envoys in Delhi, including those from the P-5 nations.

The Pakistan Foreign Secretary said in the meeting that her country has pursued a constructive approach towards India, and Pakistan’s offer of dialogue and “the Kartarpur initiative are a clear evidence of this”.

Citing Janjua, Faisal wrote on Twitter that “ratcheting up tensions in the region will be counterproductive”.

An operative of the Pakistan-based group JeM crashed a car bomb into a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Pulwama district on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway on Thursday, making it the worst ever attack on security forces on any single day since a separatist campaign broke out in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989.

Curfew Continues For Second Day In Kashmir’s Winter Capital

0

Curfew imposed here in Jammu was not relaxed on Saturday two days after 49 CRPF troopers were blown up in a suicide attack on the Jammu-Srinagar highway in Pulwama by a Jaish-e-Mohammad man, although authorities claimed the situation was under control.

“Curfew will continue till further orders. We will take a call later in the day after assessing the overall law and order situation,” said an official here.
The Mobile Internet suspension started on Friday and continued on Saturday, as well.

Speed of fixedline broadband connections have also been slashed to prevent any form of amplification of the situation given the fact that anti-social elements could upload inflammatory pictures and comments on social media to disrupt peace in the city.

Curfew was imposed on Friday when miscreants torched and damaged several vehicles that carried registration numbers belonging to the Kashmir region.

The Army was immediately called out to assist the civil administration to restore order in the city.

Curfew was initially imposed in some vulnerable areas, but was later extended to the entire city as tension mounted in the wake of violence against a particular section of the society.
The authorities met with important citizens belonging to different communities on Friday to seek their help in bringing the city back to normal.(IANS)

Five killed in US industrial park shooting

Five persons have been killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire at an industrial park in the US state of Illinois, police said.

The gunman was also killed, a police spokesman said. He added that five police officers also sustained injuries after being hit by gunfire.

The attack on Friday took place in Aurora, a suburb about 65 km from Chicago, the BBC reported.

It comes a day after the first anniversary of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, which left 17 dead.

The shooting is reported to have happened at Henry Pratt Company, a manufacturing firm that makes valves for large water pipes.

Police named the gunman as Gary Martin, 45, who they said was an employee at the industrial park.
Bill Donnell, an elected official in Aurora, told CNN that a number of civilians had been wounded in the shooting.

Chris Southwood of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police described the Aurora officers who attended and were shot at as “courageous”.

“(These) officers and their colleagues did not hesitate to literally put their lives on the line today to stop further bloodshed,” Southwood said in a statement.

An employee at nearby Capitol Printing told ABC7 they had hid in a closet when the shooting began.

Witness John Probst, who works at the plant, told ABC7 that he saw the attacker, whom he recognised as a colleague.

He said the man was carrying a handgun equipped with a laser sight, but this has yet to be confirmed by officials.

Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth said: “This is a scary, sad day for all Illinoisans and Americans.”

US President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, according to White House Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. IANS

India Says Pakistan’s Links With Pulwama Attack Clear For All To See

0

India has rejected Pakistan Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua’s claims denying her country’s links to the Pulwama terror attack, saying that JeM, which claimed responsibility for the attack on Thursday, is based in Pakistan, and the “links are clear and evident and for all to see”.

The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson on Friday termed as “preposterous” the demand for an investigation, saying there is a video of the suicide bomber declaring himself a member of the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

The spokesperson said India has not seen any constructive approach from Pakistan on bilateral relations and it has been sheltering terrorists and terror organisations such as JeM. He said Islamabad has not taken any action against such groups despite international demands.

India also demanded that Pakistan take immediate and verifiable action against militants and terror groups operating from territories under its control to create a conducive atmosphere in the region free of terror.

The spokesperson’s response came over Pakistan Foreign Secretary’s briefing rejecting Pakistan’s involvement in the terror attack on a paramilitary convoy in Jammu and Kashmir that killed at least 45 troopers. Janjua met envoys of P-5 countries late on Friday.

The spokesperson said JeM has claimed responsibility for the attack.
“The organisation and its leadership are located in Pakistan. LeT and other terror groups have welcomed the news of the attack. These groups are also based in Pakistan. Pakistan cannot claim that it is unaware of their presence and their activities.

“They have not taken any action against these groups despite international demands, especially against groups and individuals proscribed by the UN and other countries. The links to Pakistan are clear and evident for all to see. Its own Ministers have shared the same podium with UN proscribed terrorists,” the spokesperson said.
He said there was audio-visual material linking JeM to the terror attack.

“The demand for an investigation is preposterous when there is a video of the suicide bomber declaring himself a member of the JeM. There are also other audio-visual and print material linking JeM to the militant attack. We have therefore no doubt that the claim is firmly established,” the spokesperson said.

He said while there are claims to offer dialogue from Pakistan, it continues to shelter terror outfits.

“We have not seen any constructive approach from Pakistan on relations with India. What we have noticed however, are claims to offer dialogue on the one hand, while sponsoring and sheltering terrorists and militant organisations such as JeM on the other,” the spokesperson added.(IANS)

Lethpora Attack: Suicide Bomber Set Off A Huge Cache Of RDX

0

A post-blast analysis conducted by the National Security Guard at the scene of attack in Pulwama has established that the SUV driven by the suicide bomber was packed with RDX. A senior government official told The Hindu that preliminary investigations suggested that 100-150 kg of RDX was used in the attack on the CRPF convoy on Thursday. The official said samples had been collected for further forensic analysis.

Adil Ahmed Dar, the Jaish-e-Mohammad suicide bomber, rammed a bus in the convoy, killing 40 personnel near Pulwama, 30 km from Srinagar. The CRPF had been moving such convoys, comprising more than 2,500 personnel each, on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. In the past fortnight, two such convoys had moved from Jammu to Srinagar. The latest was on February 4 with a convoy of 91 vehicles and 2,871 personnel.

The militant entered the highway from a slip road (from the Kakapora-Lelhar side), hitting the CRPF bus, the fifth in the convoy, from the left side and then triggered the explosives, preliminary investigations show. The road was open for movement of civilian vehicles, and an hour back, the route has been sanitised for the presence of improvised explosive devices. More than 2,000 men were deployed for road security, an official said.

Most men killed were returning from their annual holiday. A senior government official said the convoys ran smoothly during summers but were irregular during winters and the monsoon because of snowfall and landslips.

Hence, CRPF personnel get stranded in Jammu for days. “As the transit camp has a limited capacity to accommodate only 1,000 personnel at a time, the number of stranded transients exceed 3,000-4,000,” the official said.
The official pointed out there is no facility for transporting them by air so they have to depend on the road to move from Jammu to Srinagar and back.

“As the number of personnel at the transit camps always remains high, buses are used for transportation. These buses have thin metallic plates which offer no protection from bullets or IEDs. Firing being the main threat, improvised plating has been arranged in a few vehicles but there is no safety against IEDs,” an internal note of the Home Ministry said.

The official said troops have been sensitised for stand-off firing and IEDs planted conventionally but were caught off guard by this kind of suicide attack.
“There was an input from J&K police last week about IED blasts, but it was not specific in nature,” he said.

One-way traffic allowed on Jammu-Srinagar highway

0

Jammu, Feb 16 One-way traffic was allowed on the Jammu-Srinagar highway on Saturday and only stranded vehicles are moving from Jammu to Srinagar, a traffic official said.

Around 7,000 vehicles stranded in the Kashmir Valley would only be allowed to move towards the Jammu region after the highway was completely decongested, the official added, hoping the process might get smoother by later in the day.

The strategic 300-km long national highway that links the landlocked valley to other regions was restored on Friday afternoon for traffic.

“We will take a call on allowing traffic from Srinagar to Jammu only when all the stranded vehicles were cleared,” said the Traffic Department.

Over 2,000 stranded vehicles crossed the Jawahar Tunnel till Saturday morning to reach the Kashmir Valley.

Nearly 1,000 of these were carrying essential supplies for the valley folks, who have faced acute shortage of meat, poultry, and petroleum products when the road-link was severed due to scattered avalanches and landslides in the area between February 6 and 12.(IANS)

35A case listed in SC Feb 19-21

0

Srinagar: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear petitions challenging Article 35A which gives special rights and privileges to Jammu and Kashmir between February 19 and 21st of this month.
The case will be heard by three judges: Chief Justice Ranhan Gogoi and Justices Nageswara Rao and Sanjeev Khanna. The court has cautioned advocates to not seek adjournment in matters listed before the bench.
“It will be appreciated if the advocates on record do not seek adjournment in the matters listed before all the courts in the causelist,” the court said on Friday.
On February 13 and 14, the apex court didn’t hear the case even though it was scheduled to. Also, the J&K state had moved an application for adjournment on the grounds that there was no elected government in place.
Article 35A, which was added to the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, accords special rights and privileges to the permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir and denies property rights, jobs, voting rights and scholarships to non-reidents of the state.
The main petition demanding to scrap Article 35A was filed before the apex court in 2014 by Delhi-based NGO ‘We the Citizens’. Later, a few more petitions were filed to scrap the provision.
