Mumbai, Feb 7 (PTI) Ranveer Singh, who will be playing Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan’s “83”, will soon begin training with the cricket legend for the sports drama.
The film will chronicle India’s win under Kapil’s captainship, when the Men in Blue defeated West Indies in the final to clinch their first-ever World Cup trophy in 1983.
“I am looking forward to spending time with Kapil Sir. I feel like that time spent would be integral to my process of transforming myself into him,” Ranveer said in a statement.
“I want to absorb as much as I can from him. His story, his experiences, his thoughts, feelings, his expressions, his energy,” says Ranveer.
The 33-year-old actor earlier trained with bowling great Balwinder Singh Sandhu, who will be portrayed by Punjabi singer-actor Ammy Virk in the film.
Ranveer will spend three weeks with Kapil to get the mannerisms and attitude of the character right. He will also learn the veteran cricketer’s unique bowling style.
“I’m keen on getting tips on my bowling and batting from the man himself. His achievements are extraordinary. He is the quintessential underdog who became a champion through perseverance, self-belief, hard-work and a positive mindset,” the actor said.
“I am extremely inspired by him. I want to pour myself fully into this exciting character,” he added.
The much-awaited film will release on April 10, 2020. “83” is produced by Madhu Mantena, Vishnu Induri and Khan, and presented by Reliance Entertainment.
Ranveer also has Zoya Akhtar’s “Gully Boy”, opposite Alia Bhatt. The film will release on February 14.
CHENNAI: A filmmaker was arrested in Chennai on Wednesday for allegedly murdering his wife, an aspiring actress. The woman’s body parts, without the head, were found in a dumpyard in the city last month.
Filmmaker Balakrishnan was arrested after a vital clue – two tattoos on the severed legs of the body – helped police identify that it was his wife Sandhya, 37, who was murdered.
The police, who began investigation last month with the tattoos designed like Shiva-Parvati and a dragon as clues, arrested Balakrishnan over two weeks after his wife’s murder. A bangle too helped the probe.
Balakrishnan, 51, killed his wife on January 19, chopped her body the next day and dumped the parts packed in plastic bags in garbage bins in different parts of Chennai, the police said.
Pictures of the tattoos and the bangle were circulated and the first tip-off came from Sandhya’s mother in Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu. Balakrishnan had told the family that Sandhya had returned to Thoothukudi but was not accessible on phone.
Soon, the police soon zeroed in on her husband.
“We are on the lookout for the missing head with information the accused has given us,” police officer Alvin told NDTV.
Balakrishnan confessed to having committed the crime doubting Sandhya’s loyality, the police said.
“Based on information he gave, another part of the woman’s body was also found on Wednesday,” the police said, adding that further investigation is on to find the woman’s head and torso.
The couple from Thoothukudi got married in 2000. Sandhya is fourteen years younger to Balakrishnan. Investigators say both have had problems in their relationship in the past. Last year, Sandhya had left their home and approached the police accusing her husband of domestic violence. They, however, patched up after a round of counselling.
Balakrishnan has directed and produced a film called “Kadhal Ilavasam” and was allegedly demanding a huge amount of money from his wife’s family to make another film.

Some of the proposed government regulations for social media companies operating in India are threatening the very existence of WhatsApp in its current form, a top company executive said on Wednesday.
With over 200 million monthly active users, India is WhatsApp’s biggest market in the world. Globally, the platform has over 1.5 billion users.
“Of the proposed regulations, the one which concerns us the most is the emphasis on traceability of messages,” Carl Woog, WhatsApp’s Head of Communications, told news agency IANS.
Facebook-owned WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption by default which means only the sender and the recipient can see the messages in circulation – not even WhatsApp. Without this feature, Mr Woog explained, WhatsApp will be a completely new product.
“The proposed changes are going overboard and are not consistent with strong privacy protections that people around the world are seeking,” said Mr Woog, who served as the Spokesperson for the Barack Obama administration in the US.
“Given the end-to-end encryption we have in place, the regulations will require us to re-artchitect our product,” he said, adding that in such a scenario, the messaging service would cease to exist in its current form.
Without denying the possibility of quitting the India market in case the new regulations come into force, Mr Woog told IANS: “It will not help to speculate what is to come. There is a process in place in India to discuss this issue”.
The end-to-end encryption feature makes it difficult for law enforcement authorities to find out the culprit behind a misinformation campaign. But the proposed IT Ministry regulations require social media platforms to follow a due diligence process to prevent the use of their services for spreading misinformation and provoking violence.
Facing flak from the government over dozens of lynching incidents in the country last year which were linked to rumours spread on WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned messaging service introduced several new measures including limiting the number of messages that a user can forward to five and appointing for the first time a country head for the organisation.
“We ban nearly two million suspicious accounts every month. While roughly 20 per cent of these accounts are banned at the time of registration, over 70 per cent of the spam accounts get banned without a recent user report,” Woog said.
“These efforts are particularly important during elections where certain groups may attempt to send messages at scale,” WhatsApp said.
The accounts which are flagged by users by taking advantage of an in-app “report” feature are reviewed by a team of human workers. When someone reports an account, the WhatsApp team can see the last few messages in the chat.
WhatsApp said it was hiring more reviewers with competence in regional languages in India ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.COMMENT
Addressing one of the major demands from the government, WhatsApp said, “As part of establishing our operations in India, we have identified a Grievance Officer who can be contacted directly if a user has a concern about their WhatsApp experience and is unable to report it through other channels.”
