‘Attempt to desecrate’ Jamia Masjid won’t be tolerated at any cost: JRL

0

Srinagar, Dec 29 : Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik have strongly condemned the incident that took place after Friday prayers at Jama Masjid Srinagar in which some masked elements violating all Islamic teaching, values and sanctity of the mosque and exploiting the Kalima and in the name of Islam , attempted to desecrate the pulpit (Member-e-Rasool PBUH) of Jamia Masjid stated that such anti-Islamic acts would not be tolerated at any cost.
The leadership said that it is not the first time that such a shameful act of hooliganism has been done. In the past too, some elements at the behest of certain agencies and handlers have indulged in rowdyism and hooliganism in and outside the Jamia Masjid. The leadership said that the motive of these agencies is to weaken and disunite the ongoing people’s movement of the right to self determination, and these elements are being used to divert this just movement by changing its basic nature and character under the pretence of perusing some global agenda. Such an agenda will only strength the narrative of our adversary and justify its oppression against us.
Leadership said that the people of Kashmir have given and are giving Supreme sacrifice in terms of life limb property and what not for the achievement of their internationally acknowledged fundamental birth right- the right to decide and chose their future in accordance with their wishes and aspirations and any attempt to weaken or change that discourse, be it under any pretence, will not be tolerated by the people and leadership.
Describing it as most unfortunate that some youth knowingly or unknowingly get involved and used in such acts, the leadership said that on many occasions they addressed this issue in the larger interest of the movement but now it seems to have been carried too far.
The leadership said that while aptly representing the political wishes and aspirations of the people of Kashmir, the pulpit of Jamia Masjid has sufficiently represented the voice of the youth and reflected their aspirations, as the youth play a significant role in our ongoing movement and helped to channelize it and give it a direction. However, it appears now that under a well planned design attempts are being made not only to damage this religious centre but also to change the course of the ongoing movement and create an atmosphere of confusion and anarchy among the masses so that the priceless sacrifices rendered in the movement go waste.
JRL said that these devious acts can never be in the collective interest of the people. The people of Kashmir particularly the youth are continuously nurturing this movement with their blood and it is because of their sacrifices that the ongoing struggle of Kashmiris is recognized at the global level.
The leadership said that it’s a fact that Jamia Masjid has played a historical and key role in keeping the movement alive and taking the just cause of Kashmiri’s to global level.
JRL stressed upon people particularly youth to be cautious of this propaganda of vested elements and understand the motive behind such acts that only strengthen our adversary and stay away from it can only cause harm to our movement and the sacrifices given by the lakhs of people.

Facebook to censor phrase “Free Kashmir”

0

SRINAGAR, DEC 29 : Social networking giant Facebook’s moderators tasked with removing “dangerous content” from the social networking site have been instructed to censor the phrase “Free Kashmir”.

The New York Times reported that the documents that are used to guide Facebook’s more than 7,500 moderators span more than 1,400 pages which often contain inaccuracies and outdated information.

One of these documents instructs moderators to “look out for” the phrase “Free Kashmir” – though the slogan, common among activists, is completely legal, the report said. The moderators are even warned that ignoring posts that use the phrase could get Facebook blocked in India.

According to data compiled by Statista, India has the highest number of Facebook users – 294 million (as of October 2018) – 90 million more than the number of Facebook users in the US which has the second-biggest users-base for the social network.

As Facebook faces severe criticism for allowing extremist content in some countries, and censoring legitimate posts in some other places, the job of moderators who need to monitor billions of posts every day in over 100 languages is very critical.

Those moderators, at times relying on Google Translate, have mere seconds to recall countless rules and apply them to the hundreds of posts that dash across their screens each day, the New York Times report said.

In June, according to internal emails reviewed by The New York Times, moderators were told to allow users to praise the Taliban — normally a forbidden practice — if they mentioned its decision to enter into a cease-fire. In another email, moderators were told to hunt down and remove rumors wrongly accusing an Israeli soldier of killing a Palestinian medic.

“Facebook’s role has become so hegemonic, so monopolistic, that it has become a force unto itself,” said Jasmin Mujanovic, an expert on the Balkans. “No one entity, especially not a for-profit venture like Facebook, should have that kind of power to influence public debate and policy.”

In Pakistan, shortly before elections were held in July, Facebook issued its moderators a 40-page document outlining “political parties, expected trends and guidelines.”

Pakistan, one of the world’s largest and most fragile democracies, enforces an Election Day blackout on campaigning. Facebook is a center of news and discussion during voting.

The document most likely shaped those conversations — even if Pakistanis themselves had no way of knowing it. Moderators were urged, in one instance, to apply extra scrutiny to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, a hard-line religious party. But another religious party, Jamaat-e-Islami, was described as “benign.”

Though Facebook says its focus is protecting users, the documents suggest that other concerns come into play. Pakistan guidelines warn moderators against creating a “PR fire” by taking any action that could “have a negative impact on Facebook’s reputation or even put the company at legal risk.” (PTK)
