Around 150 Militants Operating In ‘Fragile’ South Kashmir

0

There are around 150 militants operating in south Kashmir and mostly are locals, army said on Saturday.

Addressing media after the culmination of a gunfight at Tral, leading to the killing of six militants, the army’s GOC Victor Force, Major General Jhonson P Mathew said the situation in South Kashmir was “stable but fragile.”
“We had this operation today morning in the Tral region of Guri Kadal jointly by army, CRPF and police.
“It was a hideout which was prepared by the militants outside the village and by around first light we had the contact with the militants. It was a clean operation in which finally six militants were killed,” he said.
Among six militants killed in the gunfight, he said, one was Soliha Mohammad Akhoon who was known to be the deputy commander of Ansar Gazwatul Hind led by Zakir Musa, a known militant commander.
“Losing six militants is a set back as we were tracking their movement for quite a while. There were many anti-national activities in the region and they were spreading (militancy) in this region and certainly with this operation we have broken their back,” he said.
Regarding the recruiting of militants by Zakir Musa, the army commander said: “He was initially with HM and thereafter he formed this group which initially was thought to align with the Al-Qaida. However, Indian agencies are yet to confirm his allegiance to any other group outside the country. (His) group called Ghazwat-ul-Hindh as well as ISJK both seemed to be alliance and on the ideology of Islamic caliphate. He has been recruiting young boys in this area and carrying on with these activities of Gazwatul Hindh.”
He said that social media was one of the major tools being used by the militants to “propaganda their ideology and to reach the young minds and to corrupt the young minds of the Valley.”
Regarding the situation in South Kashmir, he said, somebody else has described it as stable but fragile. “And I agree with this it is still fragile,” he said.
The army commander said that there are many factors about the youths who are joining militancy ranks, but “one certainly is the radicalization and which we all talk about another is alienation and more important than that is proxy war that is being played out here by our neighbor Pakistan and that is a major factor for which youngsters going wayward and getting recruited into this unending spiral of violence.”
“Our appeal to them always had been to shun violence whatever grievances they have. There is a government and democratic process in place. They need to use the process and shun the gun culture,” he said, adding, “We have more than 150 militants who are operating south region currently and mostly are local and even few numbers of Pakistani also who are operating this area.”
He said the army was here to conduct the counter militant operations and “we will continue with our operations but at the same time, we are appealing to the youngsters to shun the gun culture, surrender and even during operations we give an opportunity to the militants to so that they can live a happy life.” (GNS)

Mehbooba gets reprieve as Congress withholds entry of five PDP leaders

0

Srinagar, Dec 22 (RNA):  After days of ‘unrest and discomfort’ within the camp, the Peoples’ Democratic Party leadership has finally something to cheer about as congress has shelved the offer of five former PDP legislators- including four former ministers- to join the party. The move comes in the backdrop of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti’s New Delhi Visit where she reportedly had urged top leaders of BJP and Congress to help her in controlling the dissent in her party.

Regional News Agency (RNA) has learnt from sources that another faction in the ‘dissent ridden’ PDP led by its former Finance Minster and renowned economist Dr. Haseeb Drabu has opened channels of communication with congress and was mulling to join the National Party. Sources privy to the developments told RNA that Drabu has been lobbying hard to get an entry into the congress along with five other former PDP legislators. Though Congress- as per sources- has remained non-committal as yet, sources said a senior Congress leader in New Delhi has been intensely lobbying on his behalf. RNA has learnt from Congress Sources in New Delhi that the point man who was a minster in Manmohan Singh government is an old friend of Drabu and has been perusing the project with Party high command. If sources are to be believed, Dr. Drabu has also forwarded a list of at least five former PDP legislators to the Congress High command through the point man who- he claimed -were willing to cross over along with him. According to Sources these include three former ministers and a former MLA including Chuadary Zulfkar, Advocate Ab. Haq Khan, Javid Mustaf Mir and Shah Mohamamd Tantray .
The development- according to sources- came after BJP government reportedly shelved the idea of appointing Dr. Drabu as chairman Economic Commission of India (ECI) as was according to sources promised to him. RNA has learnt from sources that the former Finance Minster had got an assurance that he would be appointed as Chairman of ECI by the second week of December but when Drabu sensed that the project of granting him the coveted Post was shelved, he started thinking of re-entering into politics. Pertinently, Drabu had conspicuously distanced himself from active politics after being dropped from Cabinet by then Chief Minster Mehbooba Mufti earlier this year. Sources say, the main reason behind his –distancing from active politics- was that he was assured the post of Chairman in ECI by New Delhi  and when that didn’t materialize, he re-started his efforts for re-entering  into active politics by mulling to join Congress along with four other  former PDP legislators.
The Congress camp in New Delhi however, seems not so enthusiastic about the proposal and was likely to turn it down though efforts were still afoot to convince the high command. A Senior Congress leader in New Delhi told Regional News Agency (RNA) that  Mr. Drabu was the Chief Architect of PDP-BJP alliance in 2014 when Congress along with National conference had offered ‘unconditional’ Support to Late Mufti Mohamamd Syed and his party believes that it was Dr. Drabu along with few other PDP leaders who played a spoil sport in favour of BJP. He added that now he has turned to an old time friend in Congress- who was an influential minster – in Dr. Manmohan Singh’s Cabinet- to seek an entry into the party which wasn’t acceptable to a majority of party top leaders. Another senior Congress leader in New Delhi has revealed to RNA, that for now, the project seems to have been shelved due to strong opposition within the party both at State and Central level and consequently there hasn’t been any forward movement with regard to the proposal. He however, expressed apprehension that this could impact the decision of other five former PDP legislators also to rethink about their political future other than PDP.(RNA)

Altaf Bukhari condoles death of Seven Labourers of Uri

0

SRINAGAR, December 22: Former Finance Minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari has expressed deep shock and grief over the death of seven labourers of Uri-Baramulla near a construction site of Char Dham in Uttarakhand.

Bukhari has urged the governor led administration to extend all possible help in terms of immediate disbursement of ex gratia relief and compensation to the bereaved families.

“I appeal and solicit the personal intervention of the Honb’le Governor of J&K to take up the matter with Uttrakhand government for ordering a high level inquiry into the incident that has been reportedly caused due to gross negligence by the executive agency carrying out construction work on all weather road in the area,” Bukhari remarked.

The former finance minister observed that the construction work in the name of all-weather road is justifiably a cause of concern for the experts as the same disturbs the natural ecosystem which, in turn, makes these areas more prone to landslides.

Referring to the prima facie reports of the Uttrakhand police, Bukhari said that the executive agency has been carrying the work reportedly without bothering for safety standards of the workers, resulting in such a major tragedy.

“I urge the Governor S P Malik Sahib to vehemently impress upon the Uttrakhand government to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure the safety of other labourers hired by the executive agency including those hailing from J&K,” Bukhari demanded.

While expressing solidarity with the bereaved families, Bukhari prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul and courage to the kith and kin of the deceased to bear their irreparable loss.
