High Speed Internet Services, Prepaid Calling to Be Restored by Evening Across Kashmir

Srinagar, Mar 6 : Authorities on Friday said that high speed internet services and prepaid calling across Kashmir will be restored by evening following a review of the prevailing situation, officials said.

The services were suspended on Sunday following the protests over the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Sources within the security establishment told  that internet connectivity, and prepaid calling which had been restricted as a precautionary measure in parts of the Valley, will return to normal later in the evening.

Officials said the decision comes after the situation across Kashmir remained largely peaceful throughout the day on Friday.

Notably, internet services were restricted to 2G speed and outgoing prepaid mobile calling services were suspended on Sunday, March 1. (JKNS)

Back to Normal: Restrictions Lifted Across Kashmir After Situation Remains Peaceful

Srinagar, Mar 6: Authorities on Friday said that normalcy has been restored across Kashmir and all restrictions imposed earlier as a precautionary measure have been lifted.

Senior officials within the security establishment told that the decision was taken after the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control over the past few days and mostly today as it was Friday.

“There will be no restrictions in place now and normal movement of people and vehicles will resume across all districts tomorrow i.e; Saturday,” officials said.

“Friday prayers were offered across Kashmir and culminated peacefully,” official said.

Authorities, however, said that security forces will continue to maintain routine deployment to ensure law and order and keep a close watch on the situation.

“Notably, restrictions were imposed across all districts of Kashmir on Sunday, March 1, following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.”

Strong Growth in Steel, Iron Ore and Fertilizer Traffic Helps Railways Earn Freight Revenue of ₹14,571 Crore in February

New Delhi: Indian Railways continues to play a crucial role in supporting the country’s economic activity by ensuring efficient transportation of essential commodities such as coal, steel, fertilizers, cement, food grains and containers. Freight operations in February 2026 recorded steady growth compared with the same period last year, reflecting the sustained demand for rail-based logistics across sectors.

During February 2026, Indian Railways carried 137.72 million tonnes of freight, registering a 3.96% increase compared to 132.48 million tonnes in February 2025. Freight revenue during the month stood at ₹14,571.99 crore, up from ₹14,151.96 crore in the corresponding month last year, reflecting a 2.97% increase.

Railways also recorded strong performance in terms of transport output. Net Tonne Kilometres (NTKM), which is a key indicator of freight movement, reached 76,007 million NTKM in February 2026, compared with 72,955 million NTKM in February 2025, registering a 4.18% growth.

Growth Driven by Core Commodities

A significant portion of freight traffic continues to be driven by core sector commodities. During the month, Indian Railways transported large volumes of coal, iron ore, finished steel, fertilizers, cement and container traffic. Growth in commodities such as finished steel, iron ore and fertilizers contributed significantly to the overall freight performance.

Performance across key commodities also remained encouraging. In the daily freight loading position, commodities such as Iron Ore, Pig Iron and Finished Steel, Raw Materials for Steel Plants (excluding Iron Ore), Fertilizers, Mineral Oil and Container EXIM traffic recorded notable year-on-year growth. Iron Ore loading stood at 0.675 million tonnes compared to 0.529 million tonnes last year (up 27.6%), while Pig Iron and Finished Steel registered 0.343 million tonnes compared to 0.284 million tonnes last year (up 20.8%). Raw Materials for Steel Plants (excluding Iron Ore) grew to 0.141 million tonnes from 0.096 million tonnes (up 46.9%). Similarly, Fertilizer loading increased to 0.184 million tonnes from 0.167 million tonnes (up 10.2%), Mineral Oil to 0.172 million tonnes from 0.146 million tonnes (up 17.8%), and Container EXIM traffic to 0.251 million tonnes from 0.213 million tonnes (up 17.8%).

In the monthly cumulative performance for February, several commodities registered strong growth compared to the same period last year. Fertilizer loading increased to 5.396 million tonnes from 4.224 million tonnes (up 27.7%), while Clinker rose to 6.508 million tonnes from 5.421 million tonnes (up 20.1%). Pig Iron and Finished Steel loading reached 6.237 million tonnes compared to 5.522 million tonnes (up 12.9%), and Iron Ore grew to 16.370 million tonnes from 14.925 million tonnes (up 9.7%). Growth was also observed in Container EXIM traffic (5.432 million tonnes vs 5.142 million tonnes, up 5.6%) and Container Domestic traffic (2.015 million tonnes vs 1.970 million tonnes, up 2.3%), indicating sustained demand across key industrial and logistics segments.

Rail freight remains one of the most economical and environmentally efficient modes of transportation for bulk goods, helping industries move raw materials and finished products across long distances in a reliable and cost-effective manner.

Strong Cumulative Freight Performance in FY 2025–26

Indian Railways has also recorded positive growth in cumulative freight performance during the current financial year.

During the period 1 April 2025 to 28 February 2026, Indian Railways carried 1,503.80 million tonnes of freight, compared with 1,456.07 million tonnes during the same period of the previous year, registering a 3.28% increase.

Freight revenue during this period reached ₹1,60,987 crore, as compared to ₹1,58,539.86 crore in the corresponding period last year, marking a 1.54% increase.

Total freight movement measured in NTKM stood at 840,000 million, compared with 826,586 million NTKM in the previous year, reflecting a 1.62% growth.

Supporting Economic Growth and National Logistics

Indian Railways continues to strengthen freight logistics through capacity augmentation, improved terminal infrastructure, dedicated freight corridors and digital freight management systems. These initiatives are helping industries and businesses move goods more efficiently while reducing logistics costs.

With continued investments in infrastructure and freight operations, Indian Railways remains committed to enhancing its role as the backbone of the country’s logistics network and supporting India’s economic growth.

Dry spell to continue in Kashmir till March 18: Director MeT

Srinagar, Mar 6: The Kashmir Valley is likely to continue facing dry weather conditions for another two weeks, as no major wet spell is expected until at least March 18, the Meteorological Department said on Friday.

Speaking to the media, Director Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, said that Kashmir experienced an unprecedented dry spell throughout February, which has persisted into the first week of March.

“The weather remained dry throughout February, and the dry spell is continuing in the first week of March as well,” Dr. Mukhtar said.

He said that despite the prolonged dryness, both day and night temperatures are expected to remain moderate in the coming days. However, the MeT chief added that although there is a possibility of very light precipitation in mountainous areas after March 7, it will not be significant enough to break the prevailing dry pattern.

“In the coming days, there is a possibility of light snowfall in the mountainous areas. However, overall, no significant wet spell or rain-snow is forecast until March 18,” he added. (KNS)

New Delhi, Mar 5 : The President of India on Thursday accepted the resignation of Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose as the Governor of West Bengal and announced a series of fresh appointments and transfers of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several states and Union Territories.

According to an official communiqué issued from Rashtrapati Bhavan, Shiv Pratap Shukla, currently Governor of Himachal Pradesh, has been appointed as the Governor of Telangana, while Jishnu Dev Varma, presently serving as Governor of Telangana, has been appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra.

The statement further said that Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the Governor of Nagaland, while Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the Governor of Bihar.

It also stated that R.N. Ravi, Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the Governor of West Bengal. Meanwhile, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Governor of Kerala, will discharge the functions of the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

In another key change, Kavinder Gupta, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh. Vinai Kumar Saxena, currently Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

The communiqué added that all the appointments will take effect from the dates the respective appointees assume charge of their respective offices.

J&K Govt orders administrative reshuffle, transfers 8 officials

Srinagar, Mar 5: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday ordered the transfer and posting of eight officials, including several Private Secretaries, in a minor bureaucratic reshuffle affecting key departments.

An order issued by the General Administration Department (GAD) accessed stated the transfers were effectuated “in the interest of administration.”

According to Government Order No. 284-JK(GAD) of 2026, Ms. Anuradha Abrol, a Private Secretary awaiting adjustment, has been posted to the Industries and Commerce Department.

In a three-way exchange, Private Secretary Reyaz Ahmad Bangroo was moved from the Agriculture Production Department to the Finance Department. Concomitantly, Mr. Munish Gupta and Mr. Vinod Kumar Bhat, both Private Secretaries, have been swapped between the Finance and Agriculture Production departments.

Mr. Server Ahmad Jan, formerly in the Finance Department, has been posted to the Health and Medical Education Department as a Private Secretary.

In other changes, Head Assistant Mohammad Altaf Wani and Daftari Irfan-Ullah have been transferred from the Agriculture Production Department to the Finance Department.

Furthermore, Mr. Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, a Class-IV employee of J&K Cements Limited on deputation, has been recalled from the Agriculture Production Department and re-deputed to the Finance Department.

The order was issued by Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, M. Raju (IAS).

Ex DIPR officer, aide of Ex CM passes away, colleagues condole demise

Srinagar, March 05: A former senior Information Officer of DIPR, Haji Mohamad Yousuf Bhat Raja expired today after a brief illness. He was 89.

Many of his former colleagues, friends and relatives attended his Nimazi Jinaza held at Umar Coloney, Lal Bazar, Srinagar.

Known for his qualities of philanthropy and helping nature, late Raja was quite familiar with his colleagues and comrades.

He worked in the Department in various capacities and under the guidance of luminaries in the department including late Janki Nath Zutshi, BP Sharma, GD Sharma, Bakshi Ghulam Ali, DN Razdan, Ghulam Nabi Turi, Muhammad Amin Pandit, Shyam Lal Pir and other stalwarts. During the career he rose to the position of Press Officer with former Chief Minister, late GM Shah and former Minister, Dr Mustafa Kamal.

Many of his former colleagues have condoled the demise of Mr. Raja.

Restrictions to continue across Kashmir valley on Friday

Srinagar, Mar 5 : Authorities have decided to continue precautionary restrictions across all districts of the Kashmir Valley on Friday in view of recent protests over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, officials said.

The decision was taken as a preventive measure to maintain law and order and avoid any untoward incidents, they said.

Some parts of the Valley witnessed protests earlier this week following reports of Khamenei’s death amid air strikes in Tehran, prompting the administration to impose restrictions in several areas.

A senior official said the situation across Kashmir remained largely peaceful on Thursday, but the administration was not taking any chances.

“The restrictions will continue on Friday as a precautionary step to ensure that peace is maintained,” the official said.

Security personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas, while movement in certain localities may remain regulated depending on the assessment of district authorities, officials added.

They said the administration was closely monitoring the developments and would review the situation periodically. Further decisions would be taken based on the ground assessment, they said.

There was no report of any major law and order incident during the day, officials added.

Kavinder Gupta Steps Down as Ladakh Lieutenant Governor

Srinagar, Mar 5: Kavinder Gupta has resigned from his post just about nine months after assuming office as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Gupta had taken oath on July 18, 2025, becoming the third LG of the Union Territory.

His tenure coincided with rising unrest in the region, where civil society groups and organisations such as the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance have been protesting for statehood, Sixth Schedule protections, and job reservations for locals.

Budgam: A delegation of J&K Climate Action Group -JKCAG & JK RTI Movement on Thursday had a detailed interaction with newly posted Deputy Commissioner Budgam Athar Amir Khan. The group led by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat formally welcomed Athar Amir Khan for assuming the office of Deputy Commissioner / District Magistrate Budgam and presented him a Cypress Plant as a token of gratitude. The group also presented him a memorandum related to environmental degradation in Budgam especially with regard to earth mining, riverbed mining, waste management.

During the meeting JKCAG & RTI Movement raised serious concern over non-payment of compensation to the Ring Road affected landowners from Wathoora Chadoora for which award stands to have been prepared and sent to NHAI by Collector Land Acquisition in November last year. Issues related to plantations on degraded land around Karewas, giving grazing rights to pastoralist communities and declaring Yousmarg , Doodhpathri and Tosamaidan as plastic free tourist destinations were also discussed. Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat thanked Athar Amir Khan for his role in ensuring setting up of STPs on Doodh Ganga during his tenure as SMC Commissioner.

“ As CM Omar Abdullah has formally laid the foundation stone for Sewage Treatment Plants-STPs on Doodh Ganga recently we urged upon DC Budgam to make sure this plant on Doodh Ganga downstream especially Chadoora to Mochwa Baghe Mehtab is set up efficiently as huge amount of around Rs 63 crores has been sanctioned for this work. DC Budgam assured that he will call a meeting of UEED officers soon to make sure better technology is used. He said that he would try to hold consultation with reputed institutions of the country in this regard. We discussed issues about sustainable earth mining and riverbed mining by obtaining proper environmental clearance-EC from competent agencies”   said Dr Raja Muzaffar

In addition to Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat the JKCAG, RTIM delegation consisted of Dr Rouf Malik, Mir Mushtaq, Advocate Shakir Parray and Gulzar Ahmad
