Power shortage sparks protests in Kanipora

Srinagar : Scores of people of Railway Colony Kanihama, Gund Checkpora, BonGam took to the streets, shouted slogans, to protest against an acute power shortage in these areas.


Irate over the scheduled and unscheduled power cuts, the residents of these areas on Thursday staged a protest against Power Development Department.

We are living without power supply for days, it is too much to tolerate. People have decided to protest and draw the governments attention,” said protesting residents. “Protests against power shortage is spreading across Kashmir, but the administration is hardly bothered. It can prove dangerous in the coming days when harsh weather will increase in Kashmir.

With the arrival of winter in Kashmir the shortage of electricity has added to the peoples woes. We have been protesting, but no relief has come our way,” said Sajad Ahmed who was also part of the protest. He said that thousands people in border areas in Kashmir are still living in the age of lantern as electricity has become a luxury for people in most parts.


We approached to every concerned officer but only get hollow promises and nothing was done on the ground to improve power scenario the protesting residents said.

However, the protesters appealed higher authorities of the PDD to take some positive step at the earliest to redress the power related woes of the people of living in these areas.


Meanwhile PDD official told Kashmir Despatch that efforts are on to restore electricity in these areas at earliest so that they ll not face more inconvenience.
