SOPORE, Dec 3: A day after an alleged sexual harassment incident surfaced in where Kashmir University of Agriucltural Science and Technology (SKUAST) campus in Wadoora Sopore, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad said that the institution will come up with an online grievance portal for the students within days.
Speaking exclusively with Kashmir Despatch, he said: “No doubt an unfortunate incident has been reported in my institution, but at the same time I am proud of my students who have the guts to highlight such issues.”
He said often such cases are being concealed and not brought to fore but the credit goes to the girl who not only highlighted it but gave confidence to others.
He said that with this episode, there is confidence among the students, and ‘we will cooperate with the students in future also.’
‘There is no space for such people in our institution who lack ethics and morality.’
The VC of SKUAST said in this case already institutions have swung into action and have suspended the accused professor only yesterday, and the sexual harassment committee is looking keenly into this matter and, as per relevant sections of law, further action will be taken against the accused.
Dr. Nazir said that restoring the confidence of students is a top priority and will give them a free space where they can not only feel more secure but comfortable too, he added.
Authorities at SKUAST said that a girl student (name withheld) had complained against a RAWE programme coordinator for molesting her on Thursday.
Pertinently, earlier this week, a girl student in Sopore’s degree college accused a college professor of sexually harassing her, after which a panel to probe the allegation was constituted. The inquiry is pending in the case.
