The Prevailing Delimitation Exercise

Date:

On a consultative 4-day tour to the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, the Delimitation Commission led by Chairperson Justice (retd.) Ranjana Prakash Desai & Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra arrived here on Tuesday.

The Commission began to interact with a myriad of political delegations along with 17 district units of various political parties. However, several local parties chose not to meet with the commission in which PDP remained at the forefront, who somehow tried to maintain a higher moral ground in contrast to its partisans in the PAGD alliance.

However, the majority of both regional and national level parties enthusiastically deliberated their views before the Commission members in regards with the ongoing delimitation process and put forward their suggestions that are needed to be taken into consideration while chalking out the new constituency boundaries.

Many memorandums were submitted suggesting that either the current constituency boundaries be redrawn by setting right the errors that had been committed in the past or adding few more constituencies in several districts of Kashmir division in proportionate to their population ratio.
Also as per the guidelines laid down for declaring a specific area as a Constituency by the Delimitation Commission, various existing constituencies in the district Srinagar especially Habba Kadal and Khanyar fail to reach that miracle number.

But on the other side the huge population residing in Batamaloo Constituency may eventually lead to its imminent bifurcation, thus giving rise to new twin constituencies. All these unprecedented changes shall be more visible across the whole of Jammu & Kashmir, particularly when the Delimitation Commission will submit its report and the fate of erstwhile constituencies in regards to its boundaries, bifurcation, amalgamation or dissolution will be unveiled.
