Tomato Flu and Precautions

Date:

The report about 13 children who were infected with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) commonly known as tomato flu at a private school in Srinagar has sent shivers down the spine of parents who now fear sending their wards to the schools.

HFMD is a mild, contagious viral infection common in young children with symptoms including sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet.

The Directorate of Health Services Kashmir has directed the officials to identify suspected cases in order to prevent spread of this disease at the schools and the doctors have been asked to go for early diagnosis and timely treatment.

According to the directorate of health services tomato flu can be managed with intake of plenty of fluids, isolation and rest. Sanitization, isolation and hygiene are the best preventive measures for this disease.

Though symptomatic treatment is not required, consultation with a doctor is important. The government must up with advisories in local print and electronic media thereby informing people not to worry and instead follow the given advisories on HFMD.

The school education department should activate its field staff across length and breadth of the UT who can look out for children with fever rash/blisters on palms and souls and to isolate them immediately. Screening before coming to class is recommended. If there were any more cases should be reported immediately.

By now people have gained vast experience about tackling the viral diseases since the spread of Covid-19.  Parents need to behave responsibly while sending their children to schools. They should check their wards for any such symptoms on a regular basis before boarding them in the school buses every morning.   In case of any such symptoms, they should keep their children at home and give proper medical care till they recover fully.
