Tomato skyrockets to Rs 200/kg in Kashmir markets

Srinagar, July 17 : The prices of tomatoes in Kashmir have reached an all-time high, causing major concerns among consumers.

As per Kashmir Despatch Correspondent, Over the past few weeks, the price of tomatoes has skyrocketed, reaching as high as Rs 200 per kilogram in local markets in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The sudden surge in tomato prices has left many Kashmiri households grappling with the increased financial burden. Consumers now find themselves in a difficult position, as tomatoes are a staple ingredient in various dishes and play a crucial role in everyday cooking.

Some experts attribute it to the unfavorable weather conditions that have affected tomato production in the region.

Farooq Ahmad a vegetable seller told Kashmir Despatch that Erratic rainfall patterns and unseasonal weather have adversely impacted the tomato harvest, leading to a decline in supply.

He said transportation challenges and logistics issues have also played a significant role in the price surge.

Ghulam Hassan another vegetable seller told this newspaper that Limited access of tomatoes to the region, coupled with increased transportation costs, has further constrained the supply chain, exacerbating the tomato shortage in the region.

The skyrocketing prices have not only affected individual consumers but have also impacted local businesses, particularly restaurants and food vendors who heavily rely on tomatoes for their culinary creations.

Satish Bhai a restuarant owner told Kashmir Despatch that we been forced to revise their menu offerings or seek alternative ingredients, resulting in both financial implications and alterations in taste.

A food officer in a chat with Kashmir Despatch said that Government is closely monitoring the market and exploring measures to stabilize tomato prices.

Efforts are being made to improve the transportation infrastructure and streamline the supply chain to ensure a steady and affordable supply of tomatoes to the region he said.

The officer however urged residents to explore other options and make necessary adjustments to their meals.

Pertinently, consumers hope for a drop in prices, the current situation stands as a reminder of the vulnerability of agricultural markets and the impact of external factors on everyday life.

Meanwhile, Farmers in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, are experiencing great joy with this skyrocketing prices of tomatoes.

In Bain village alone, more than 500 farmers have been engaged in tomato and vegetable farming for many years, and for the first time, they are reaping substantial profits from their produce.
