Sopore, July 11: Inhabitants of Behrampora area of Sopore town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday staged a protest against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for ‘failing to provide adequate water supply to them’.

The protesting inhabitants blocked Sopore-Behrampora road to highlight the water crisis in the area.

The residents raised slogans against the Jal shakti department and were demanding immediate restoration of water supply to them.
The protesting residents said that they are facing immense hardships due to the acute shortage of water supply from last week in the area which is a shame on the Jal Shakti department.

Farooq Ahmed a protestor told Kashmir Despatch that with the acute shortage of water scarcity in the area, our women flock have to walk miles for a single bucket of water and that too is difficult to get sometimes in this hot weather.

The protesting residents alleged that officials in the Jal shakti department have failed to provide water supply to the area since last week.

An in-charge officer at Jal Shakti sub division Watergam Zafar Ahmad told Kashmir Despatch that people are using illegal water mortars during night hours which is the main cause of this problem, he said a team has been constituted by the department who will visit these areas and whosoever will found involved will be dealt strictly. The officer as everyone is well aware that these two-three months are very crucial in Kashmir but still, people are misusing the water which causes inconvenience to them. He however assured that matter will be resolved within a short period of time.
