Challenges new quota system citing impact on General Category
New Delhi, August 16: A delegation from the Jammu & Kashmir Civil Society met with Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, to discuss concerns regarding the recently implemented reservation policy in the Union Territory.
The delegation expressed apprehension about the policy’s impact on open merit and general category students. They raised concerns that the new guidelines have significantly reduced opportunities for these students in higher education and government jobs.
The civil society members emphasized the need for a balanced approach that uplifts marginalized communities without disadvantaging others.
During the meeting, the delegation requested a review of the policy to address the concerns of general category students who they believe are bearing the brunt of these changes.
While acknowledging the government’s initiatives to support marginalized communities, they stressed the importance of maintaining fair competition and equal opportunities for all.
The civil society representatives thanked Minister Rai for his responsiveness and commitment to addressing societal grievances. This meeting highlights the ongoing debates surrounding affirmative action policies in Jammu & Kashmir. As the situation develops, further discussions between stakeholders and government officials are expected.
