Army Terms Beating Of Police Officer By Its Soldiers ‘Unfortunate, One Off Incident’

Srinagar, June 20 : A day after soldiers “beat up” a police officer near Poshana along Mughal road, army on Sunday termed the “reported altercation” as “unfortunate and “one off incident” even as it ordered internal inquiry.

Police has filed a case (FIR No 234/ 2021) under IPC sections 341 (wrong restraint)/342 (wrongful conferment)/323 (voluntarily causing hurt) was registered at Police Station Surankote, in Poonch against Major Santosh Pandey, junior commissioned officer (JCO) Naresh and few other jawans of 16-Rashtriya Rifles (RR) for manhandling SHO Rajouri, inspector Sameer Jeelani at Poshana Army post on Mughal Road.

“A Joint Check Post has been established at Poshana by Jammu & Kashmir police and
Indian Army to assist the (people) in transiting through treacherous Pir Ki Gali along Mughal
Road to Kashmir valley,” a defence ministry spokesman said in a statement to GNS, adding, “Besides providing humanitarian assistance during inclement weather conditions the post at Poshana also assists security forces in maintain close vigil on inimical elements attempting to disturb peace in the region. The Indian Army is committed to assist Jammu & Kashmir police in thwarting nefarious designs of Anti Social Elements in smuggling of Arms, Narcotics and conduct of illegal activities through Poshana Joint Check Post.”

The spokesman said that the incident involving “reported altercation between Police and Army is unfortunate. “

“The one off incident is an aberration to the excellent work being done by both the security agencies in ensuring a secure environment,” the spokesman said, adding, “Serious cognisance has been taken by the hierarchy and due legal proceedings have been initiated, which including ordering of internal enquiry by the Army.”

The spokesman said the Indian Army and “Jammu & Kashmir Police reaffirm their solidarity towards people and are committed to maintain peace and stability in the region.” (GNS)
