After Ladakh gets division, thousands protest in Kargil for being neglected

Date:

Srinagar: All party leaders of district Kargil staged a protest on Sunday against the governor’s decision of setting up the office headquarter only at Leh, after granting Ladhak the division stature.

Thousands of locals including social activists took on roads and performed a peaceful demonstration against the decision of not giving an equal share to the people of Kargil following the announcement from the state governor to give the separate division to the Ladakh.

Sajad Ahmad, 33, a social activist said that the decision is highly condemned by the locals. Adding to this, he said that the sacrifices of people are being sidelined.

“They are pushing people towards separatism by such steps. It was already decided by the leaders of Leh with a full consensus that the office headquarters will be set-up at both places. For summers it will be at Kargil and in Leh for winters,” Mr. Ahmad said.

The locals are demanding that the office headquarters of the new ‘division’ should be at a rotational basis.

Citing reasons that in summers the secretariat is functioning at Srinagar and from Kargil, it would be easier to operate. And in winters it is being shifted to Jammu, so from Leh, it is easier to stay connected.

Anjuman-e-Jamiyati Ulma Kargil, Imam Khomoni memorial Trust,  Amjuman-e-Sahibi Zaman, Ehle Sunat Wal Jamat, minority Sikh Association, PDP, BJP, NC, and Congress party leaders were leading this protest.

However, the president of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Mohammad Ali Majaz on Saturday announced that if they will create discrimination to the people of Kargil, Majaz will resign the party.

Added that on 9 February, all political parties leaders from Kargil threatened the governor that they will resign from their respective parties if their demand will not be addressed.
